Similar timbers. All species of the "white oak" group (Quercus, sect. quercus).

Geographic distribution. Temperate Asia. Eastern Russia, China, Korean peninsula, Japan.

Growth rings, colour, grain, etc. Growth ring boundaries distinct (easily recognized by pronounced earlywood pore rings). Heartwood basically brown; without streaks. Sapwood distinct from heartwood colour. Sapwood light greyish-brown, heartwood light brown or tan. Wood of medium weight to heavy and hard (0.68–0.75–0.78 g/cm3). Interlocked grain absent.

Hardwood vs softwood. Vessels (pores) present (= hardwood).

Vessels (pores). Wood ring-porous; earlywood pore ring multiseriate. Vessels (pores) arranged in a dendritic pattern; exclusively solitary. Vessels large (earlywood). Tyloses present. Other deposits in heartwood vessels (pores) absent.

Axial parenchyma. Axial parenchyma present; banded. Parenchyma bands not (only) marginal; narrow; forming a reticulate pattern with rays. Other macroscopically visible types of axial parenchyma: diffuse-in-aggregates. The fine and wavy axial parenchyma bands can be detected only in the dark latewood.

Rays. Rays wide (also in combination with narrow rays); of two distinct sizes. Large rays commonly over 5 mm and up to several cm high. The very high rays give the timber a striking lustrous fleck figure on accurately quarter-sawn stock.

Storied structure. Storied structure absent.

Heartwood extractives leaching out when in contact with water. Ethanol extract not fluorescent; colour shade of ethanol extract yellow. Froth test positive. Splinter burns to charcoal.
