Dianthus guide
April 8th, 2021
Carnation; Sweet William; Dianthus… This flower sure has a lot of (nick)names and a dedicated fanbase across the globe. No wonder! This flower has a long shelf life, is highly versatile and combines very well with other flowers such as Roses, Leucospermum, Eustoma and many, many more. Dianthus is one of the most cultivated and bestselling flowers in the world, this is expressed in the thousands of (man made) varieties.  Each of these varieties have something truly special. In order to keep an overview between the abundance of varieties within our webshop selection, we've made a small guide and divided the dianthus in four categories.

Standard Dianthus

Dianthus caryophyllus, also called the "standard carnation / dianthus", has one large flower bud. This variety has numerous, sturdy petals and a double blossom. The petals are slightly ruffled, almost resembling a multi-layered tule skirt. The colour range is endless; from pristine white to bright purple; and from soft green to Barbie pink. In addition, we offer countless duo-coloured varieties such as soft yellow / salmon pink; and cream / purple.

Spray Dianthus

Our next variety is the spray dianthus, which also belongs to the ‘Dianthus Caryophyllus’ species. The flower buds of the spray dianthus have roughly the same shape as the single-flowered varieties,  but the flower heads are smaller. In return, you get several flower buds to enjoy! The colour options are just as endless as the single-flowered varieties.

Sweet William

Dianthus Barbatus, also called "Sweet William", has a more delicate and graceful appearance compared to the previously mentioned categories. The varieties within this species each have five petals that are either single-coloured or bi-coloured, with the edges of the flower being a lighter color than the interior of the leaf. Within our selection, this species is referred to as "Solo mio" (amongst other names).

"Grassy" varieties (barbatus)

Varieties such as Dianthus kiwi, Aldo green, Green ball and Green trick are also part of the Dianthus barbatus species.  However, through cultivation the flowers have been removed from these varieties, so that only the green grass-like blades remain. The blades grow close together and have a spherical inflorescence. These varieties are perfect for adding unique texture and playfulness to the arrangement. There are also Barbatus varieties combining the green blades of Barbutus Aldo and the flowers of the Sweet William.
