Why did this hotel catch your attention? What's the vibe?At the luxurious Londra Palace, huge windows in many of the 52 rooms look straight out over the watery expanse of the Venetian lagoon. The only drawback? You many never want to leave.

What's the backstory? The Londra Palace—under a succession of names—has been welcoming guests since 1853. Tchaikovsky stayed in 1877, and wrote his fourth symphony as he surveyed San Giorgio Maggiore across the water. Part of a small Italian hospitality group, the property is now a member of the Relais & Chateaux association.

Tell us all about the accommodations. Any tips on what to book? With bold colors, lashings of brocade in drapes, plush wall coverings, and marble bathrooms, this is Venice tradition at its finest. There’s a marvelous top-floor suite with its own large, lagoon-facing terrace, as well as a number of junior suites with little balconies. But even the more modest, backwards-facing Classic rooms are well sized and enjoy lovely rooftop views.

Is there a charge for Wi-Fi?Good-quality wifi is included in the room rate.

Drinking and dining—what are we looking at?Breakfast is in line with the hotel’s luxurious nature, as is the Do Leoni restaurant, which is a destination in itself. Enjoy your meal from the pretty hotel terrace on the lagoon-side Riva degli Schiavoni, which is well sheltered from the passing throngs of tourists.

And the service? There’s an old-fashioned nature—in the very best way possible—to the staff in this hotel. You can rely on them for down-to earth advice, tours, and bookings.

What type of travelers will you find here? This hotel draws well-heeled, well-traveled visitors who appreciate a good classic.

What about the neighborhood? Does the hotel fit in, make itself part of the scene? The Riva degli Schiavoni—the great sweep of lagoon-side promenade—is home to many of Venice’s top hotels, and with this view, you can understand why. In recent times the Riva has become overrun, though, and the crowds and schlocky souvenir stalls make these hotels feel like a calm refuge from the ills of modern tourism.

Is there anything you'd change?Drinks in the bar are wildly expensive.

Any other hotel features worth noting? The roof terrace is one of the highest in Venice and the view is divine. The kettles and Nespresso machines in bedrooms are a nice touch.

Bottom line: Worth it? Why?If Venetian classic is what you’re after, the Londra Palace is perfect; plus, it comes with a price tag that's lower than many other of the city’s other top-tier hotels.
