We all know about Table Mountain, but what's the story at Lion's Head?
The neighbor to the much more formidable Table Mountain, Lion's Head is no shrinking violet: the striking conical spire adds a distinctive quirk to Cape Town's skyline. While many like to hike both, Lion's Head is a much quicker and easier climb, and the trail wraps around on its way to the top, which means your view is constantly changing—just what you need to keep you energized when you start to feel winded. And best of all, Table Mountain makes up part of your view.

Fun! So what will we see there?
The view from the top is stunning, but those who know the mountain well know that Wally's Cave, which perfectly frames Table Mountain, is where you'll find the dreamiest Instagram shot. Be sure to ask around for directions, since it can be a bit tricky to find. And then carry on to the top, where it's best to plan to arrive for sunset or sunrise.

Got it. So how do we get to the top, or to Wally's Cave?
Park (or get dropped off) at the base of the mountain on Signal Hill, then follow the path that winds its way around the spire. Things get tricky about two thirds of the way up, though: There's some sharp climbs, but ladders and chains built in to the rockface help you stay on track. Lion's Head is definitely not for people with mobility issues.

That sounds cool. All said and done, what—and who—is this best for?
This site is perfect for an active traveler, but it's a fairly moderate hike so people of all physical-fitness levels should be able to enjoy it (kids love it, too). If you're nervous about sharp climbs, you may want to take a pass.
