Orthophytum rafaelii is a petite species found in the Chapada Diamantina region of Bahia, Brazil, near Palmeira, Serra das Paridas, and Cachoeira do Mosquito. It thrives as a lithophyte, inhabiting rock crevices on cliff faces, where it enjoys partial shade from surrounding shrubs. This plant, measuring approximately ten inches in diameter, features numerous slender and rigid leaves lined with large, curved spines. Its upper surface is green while the underside is white, embellished with a generous coating of trichomes. When exposed to bright light, a red flush emerges, and during its blooming period, it showcases cherry-red coloration with a green center, accompanied by white flowers. Overall, this species possesses exceptional ornamental value.
