Populus × generosa 'Unal'
Populus × generosa 'Unal'
Willow family (Salicaceae)
Just right for Belgian matches
These poplars are incredibly fast-growing trees that have resulted from 20th-century crosses between poplar species from the Aigeiros section (black poplar) and section Tacamahaca (balsam poplar). If, in early spring, one such poplar is felled in the prime of life with the sap already rising, water will continue to be pushed up the tree from the roots and gush forth from the saw cuts.
The tree has a relatively straight trunk. The crown of the young tree is conical but when it matures it is more ovoid to round.
The cultivar ‘Robusta’ is widely used for the manufacture of clogs whereas the cultivar ‘Unal’ owes its name to the Belgian Matchbox factory Union Allumetière.
