Say hello to this RARE Penstemon hailing from Texas and New Mexico. Known as “Alamo Beardtongue”, it’s a low growing, semi-alpine species found in sheltered rocky areas and canyon sides at 4000-5,000’ elevations. It first sprouts a 6-10” high basal rosette of bluish-gray leaves and then from late April to early July vivid coral-red tubular flowers held high on 2-3’ stems. The slightly flared 1” flowers are a magnet for hummingbirds, making it a valuable addition to a pollinator garden. With a little regular water, plants will stay evergreen, yet keep their compact form. They’re an excellent choice for a low water bed and would be ideal situated with Aloes, another hummer plant. Plant in well-drained soil in sun to light shade. Heavier blooming comes in year two.
