About this item

  • Calceolaria crenatiflora, or the Pocketbook plant, is a tender herbaceous perennial grown as half-hardy annual. It is a demanding plant, typically grown as a greenhouse plant in northern climates, but can be grown in the open if its temperature, moisture, and light requirements are met.
  • Grow calceolaria in full sun (at least 6 to 8 hours of direct sun) or part shade outdoors (morning shade and afternoon sun) for best blooms. Because it loves cool weather, you can move it to increasingly shaded spots as temperatures rise to help keep your plant happy longest.
  • Although they can sometimes be used as bedding plants, Calceolaria are usually grown in pots indoors. They prefer to be positioned in a cool room with diffused sunlight. They should be watered regularly, and their potting medium should be light and fertile.

  • Grow in a light, acid soil, in full sun or partial shade. Traditionally grown as a houseplant or greenhouse specimen. They can be grown outdoors as summer bedding or as container plants. They should be given a warm sheltered spot, ideally at the base of a south or west facing wall.
  • Calceolaria mexicana is an annual with typical yellow flowers that bloom all summer. Pocketbook plant related varieties: Goldcrest, Golden Bunch, and Midas are all sunshine-yellow in color. Goldcrest has larger flowers than the others. Bubblegum mix has large flowers in a range of oranges.
  • Calceolarias often bloom for 2 to 4 weeks when given the proper environment and good care. Plants require specific temperatures and day lengths to rebloom making them very difficult to grow and flower year after year at home. Plants should be discarded when flowering is completed.
