If you love this genre, definitely try this one.
My only gripe is that the disc doesn't really work since Steam ignored it and download everything. It was a long install.
Why buy the boxed version? Well, why not? It's the same price as the digital download and shipping is free. You'll get a DVD-ROM case that has a nice slip sleeve with a gate that opens to reveal glossy artwork. While supplies last, you get a folded poster, which doesn't suit my personal taste. The poster is a gloomy depiction of soldiers and machines on a war path. Personally, I'd rather have the lovely box art with the astronaut filling me with wonder and excitement of humankind's first real footprint in space.
There is also an 8 page booklet that includes a hot key reference chart. According to the included mini booklet, there is supposed to be a digital manual in the Steam installation directory for the game -- it is missing. That being said, the tutorials included with the game are very good. Civilization manuals tend to become outdated as the game is updated anyway, so I don't think I am missing anything by not having it.
By the way, if you have a pre-order copy, the Exo-Planets Map Pack doesn't show up as a DLC. When you are at the Choose Planet screen, click on Advanced Worlds and you will see the additional planet maps.
As for the game itself, it is enjoyable -- especially once you learn the tips and tricks of how to play (most notably how to manage colony health during expansion).
To start off, the factions you choose from don't really give me a "unique" game-changing vibe. Each one has certain perks that caters to a certain playstyle, but most they just seem boring and irrelevant overall, compared to being the Persians for immortals, or the Germans for their late-game Panzers that give me a sense of cultural advantage. Most of the units you end up getting depend solely on the affinity that you pick, which brings me to my next point.
The resources are so dull and unexciting. I will never forget the thrill of seeing precious iron popping up in Civ 3. It was of the utmost importance that your empire discovers and utilizes iron or else it puts you at a major set back. Several aspects of the game collapse without it. Oh, and coal and oil each had similar feelings to them. During my playthroughs of Beyond Earth the resources that popped up were mostly useless unless your affinity required them for their special units. And the more units you built the more of your special resource you needed. Honestly, that was an interesting challenge because it forced you to shape your borders a certain direction to get exactly what you needed. But the conquest aspect of the game was lackluster.
Satellites could have been more interesting. Naval battles were the most fun. The side quests too easy and repetitive. The wonders were okay, with interesting background stories, but lacked animation. Siege worms would linger around cities, get shot with city defense, leave, heal, repeat. It was an annoying, nonstop nuisance. The AI was dumb as hell and never did anything other than complain about our differences. I know I'm kind of jumping around but it's just numerous things like these that made me not really enjoy it enough to want to play countless matches like I did in Civ 3.
After all of this standard Civilization engine gameplay and I've achieved some sort of victory, I was expecting more than just a pop up with some concept art and a short text. The game would be at least replayable if each affinity had a special ending scene to watch. It totally killed any sense of accomplishment I had prior to last move.
I was hoping the game would be more than just a Civ 5 with a new theme. Hopefully in the future there will be a Civ that is more immersive, more challenging and thrilling than what they've already produced.
