I purchased this plant (same "Polar Night"; same seller) last year but recently re-bought it again. The first arrived well packed and beautifully robust with tons of dormant but established buds. It bloomed in spring and everyone was envious with the unique color. Then, despite surviving a NC winter dormant and flowering VERY briefly in spring...it promptly up and died. Almost overnight it was a useless husk of a shrub. I tried amending the soil, moving the pot and finally putting it directly into the ground. Nothing. Nada. Zilch. It became a pile of twigs. I was especially annoyed because my other rhodies and azaleas have all flourished... so, of course, my favourite "rare" one was the one to die. After being pestered by my daughter, we ordered it again. I knew it would arrive dormant (it was November in NC), but it looked totally different from my first purchase. First and foremost it was shipped in it's box UPSIDE down (and yes, I checked the box to be sure delivery didn't make a boo-boo... it clearly said which side was "up" which is how Amazon delivered it... but it was upside down, crushed, the soil spilled out everywhere and dry as a bone). This time, too the plant was tiny (and yes, again dormant... but still it shouldn't be shriveled and black/ brown) and already looking ill. The few buds all had black tips and curling leaves. I've had too much sickness and life events to bother with sending it back...but it is really upsetting. I don't know if it's a seller issue (I had another "Princess" rhodie by the same seller die in summer after "Polar Night"}. The only plant from this seller to survive (although spring 2024 should re-assure me more since it's been droopy for awhile now) was "Prince". Needless to say, I've an extensive garden of plants... yet these seem to be the main failures. Two rhodies I bought locally are doing just fine in the same yard/ areas/ lighting, soil and-or pots. I wanted "Blue Baron" and maybe another from here, but sadly the items here just aren't working out for me. My daughter is equally upset the "Polar Night" failed because of the rare color but also that "Princess" died (her name means Princess). I'll try to upload pictures of both later, but at this point I'm done buying rhododendrons online. They are traditionally hard to find locally in my area... maybe this is why? I don't know since friends and neighbors haven't had my ill luck. Honestly, if this plant is so tempermental... I'd suggest buying it locally and ideally somewhere with a 1 year warranty. Sad.
