About this item

Red 'Earth Star' Cryptanthus | USA-grown | Shipped with care in a 3.5 inch container
The Cryptanthus 'Earth Star' or 'Starfish Plant' is a terrestrial species of the Bromeliad family. This rosette, star-shaped houseplant originates from Eastern Brazil and loves humidity. Clinging to the ground surface like a fallen star, this species is low-growing and features serrated, triangular leaves with bright color. Striping runs through each leaf and contrasts the plant's dominant color. Endemic to Brazil, Cryptanthus plants live on rain forest floors and are accustomed to humidity. Unlike other Bromeliads, 'Earth Stars' are soil-growing and develop foliage close to the ground. These plants exist underneath forest canopies in a natural habitat, areas where sunlight is dispersed through vegetation. Easy to grow and maintain, it's a favorite, reliable houseplant for gardeners of any skill. Your red 'Earth Star' Cryptanthus will arrive in a black, 3.5 inch container. At full maturity, it can reach 6 inches tall and 15 inches wide. Each of our Cryptanthus are hand-selected, so you may receive a plant that varies somewhat in appearance from our photos.
We take every precaution to package your plants for a successful arrival. Cryptanthus are resilient, although more fragile varieties may experience minimal damage in-transit. Every so often a package will endure some stress, causing some soil or plants to come loose. Should soil disruption occur, simply put the loose soil back in the pot and dampen it. To stabilize the plant, gently push soil around the base.

A rosette Bromeliad that resembles a starfish. This red 'Earth Star’ Cryptanthus grows vibrant, serrated foliage with longitudinal stripes in the shape of a loose rosette. Resembling a starfish, this standout plant is sure to play a starring role in terrariums and among other houseplants. |
Impressive, yet low-maintenance.Once established, 'Earth Stars' are relatively drought-tolerant. Light, periodic waterings are recommended when their soil is dry to the touch, and they appreciate being misted occasionally. They are moderately slow growers that have the potential to bloom a small, white flower as they mature. |
Healthy. Happy. Hardy. You can expect the hardiest of plants in your order. We're committed to caring for every plant from the time we root them to the moment we ship them to fellow plant lovers like you. |
Product Description
Cryptanthus 'Earth Star' or 'Starfish Plant' is a Bromeliad native to the tropical climate of Brazil. This terrestrial plant possesses breathtaking colors and resembles a fallen or twinkling star. A member of the Bromeliaceae family, the Earth Star has stunning, water-storing foliage that brightens in the sun. Low-growing Cryptanthus plants are petite beauties that can reach up to six inches tall; complementary to small pots, fairy gardens or terrariums. This species grows with flat, serrated leaves and enjoys humidity. Outdoors, the Cryptanthus plant will favor warmer temperatures (65 to 75 degrees) but can tolerate cooler temperatures indoors. Longitudinal stripes run along each leaf to contrast the plant's primary colors (which can range from shades of green, vibrant pinks, reds and more). Thriving with indirect sun, the Starfish Plant is going to respond well to areas of the home where light shines through. For drainage, a bromeliad potting mix is recommended when growing the Cryptanthus in a pot and consistent moisture (with light watering cycles) will help development. The colorful Earth Star plant has the capability to bloom a partially hidden, small, white flower from the center bract once during a lifespan. The Red Star will shine when the plant is accented with an eye-catching, novelty pot or ceramic planter. These tiny, varied Bromeliad plants may be grown by themselves as singular decorations or together in mass for a larger display. Each prime, real Earth Star is fully rooted and arrives in a starter container.
