About this item

  • Viola wittrockiana is a well-known and popular bedding plant for early fall, winter and spring blooms. This Swiss Giant Pansy ‘Alpenglow’ has large 3 – 4 inch blooms that are cardinal red with a black blotch. Pansies are great performs with little maintenance, and they look great in the flower bed or in containers.
  • Pansy Alpenglow grows in USDA zones 5 - 9 as an 8 - 10 binennial flower plant with cardinal red flowers.
  • They mix well with spring bulbs and are great for early color. These large pansies are quite charming and old fashioned coming from Switzerland in the early 1900s. They make nice cut flowers as well.
  • Sowing Rate: 3 - 4 seeds per plant. For spring blooms, it is best to start the seed indoors in the late winter. Press the seed into the soil and lightly cover with peat moss. Darkness aids germination so it is best to shade the starter tray. With a temperature of 65 - 70F, germination normally occurs within 21 days.
  • Harden off the seedling prior to planting outdoors. Space the young plants outdoors 9 – 12 inches apart. Grow in full sun to partial shade and in moist, well-drained soil. Twelve weeks are needed from seeding to blooming. Deadheading encourages continuous blooms. Pansies are known to reseed.

No garden is complete without red Pansy flowers! Easily grown from Pansy seeds, this Swiss giant Pansy reaches 3 inches across and features a cardinal red bloom with a black blotch. The Viola Swiss giant is known for its large flowers and black blotches in the center, and it is one of the largest Pansy flowers available. Pansies are ideal for fall color, and in mild climates, they can bloom all fall, winter, and into the spring. Such a cool season performer, and it can be grown from flower seeds!

These flowers won't be flopping around when the weather is unseasonably harsh! Pansies are a great choice for window boxes, hanging baskets, pots, or anywhere in the sunny flower garden. What a rewarding little gem for your enjoyment! These plants will start blooming 12 weeks after the sowing date, so it is best to start them indoors in order to get a jump on the growing season.

How to Grow

Sow these seeds indoors about 6-8 weeks before the last expected frost. Plant them in pots or trays with a quality starter mix, and cover lightly with peat moss. Then provide shade, as darkness assists germination.

Keep the seeds moist until germination, which will occur in 7-21 days. As soon as seedlings emerge, move them to a cool, bright area and continue to keep them moist.

Harden off the plants prior to planting outside. Use a balanced liquid fertilizer to feed the plants. For fall blooms, set pansies out as early as possible so they can establish roots.
