Its a pretty bold claim but for many, Mario Party is the best multiplayer game series ever. No need for guns or complicated role-playing elements here--Mario Party is fun because its simple. The original N64 game created an entirely new subgenre--an unlikely combination of traditional board games and lots of ultrasimple arcade titles. The idea is that you travel around the board trying to collect stars, which must be paid for with coins, and you get coins by competing in minigames, which occur at the end of every round. These minigames generally dont last longer than a minute or two, and many are based on old Game & Watch titles. There are over 50 minigames in Mario Party 4, and each involves either a free-for-all, two players against two, or one against three (depending where you land on the board at the end of your turn). These can involve anything from skydiving to basketball dunking, or car racing to hide-and-seek, to name a few.
Admittedly, this basic description of the gameplay might not sound too exciting, and indeed if youre playing with less than three human opponents it can be pretty tedious. But play it with the full complement of non-virtual rivals and the games infinite capacity for cheating, backstabbing, and ganging up allows it to completely transcend the humdrum sum of its parts. Theres nothing terribly new in this third sequel except that the graphics are much improved and the minigames are all new, but that really misses the point: get this game out at Christmas instead of Trivial Pursuit and youll wonder how you ever got through the holiday without it. --David Jenkins, Amazon.co.uk

But for the sake of everyone interested in buying this game I have to intervene, though i bought my copy with no case or manual unintentionally for $50 this Mario Party isn't worth $40 brand new, in my opinion this is the weakest out of the first 5 Mario Party titles barring Mario Party 1's minigame design breaking peoples wrists. In order from weakest to best it is 4, 3, 1&5, with 2 being the clear best after re-owning and playing all of them. I recommend if you want a good Mario Party either pick up 2 physically for the n64, buy it digitally for $10 on the Wii and Wii U shop and as many Classic controller pro's that you are able, or buy multiple Mario Party's in a bundle.
Mario Party 4 is bland in its board design and layout, forgettable in its aesthetic, lifeless in its music and bafflingly stupid in item capabilities. So one at a time lets start with story mode, this games Campaign is centered around your characters birthday and beating every board and Bowser to get your presents, that is the weakest most try-nothing reason to play Mario Party ever. Remember in 1 and 2 where all the characters just became competitive from wanting to win? Or how about 3 where you have to beat every board and every singular character in a duel for the Millenium Star, solely for the sake of it making your character the Superstar? Welp its not like I wanted to be slightly competitive when playing Mario Party outside of yelling at my friends but jeez if this isn't a bare excuse for win every single board.
Speaking of which the "Boards", unlike 1, 2, 3 or 5 Mario Party 4 replaces curving and winding areas of creativity atmosphere or design, instead replacing the winding paths with straight lines and tile paths that also have weird green halogen lights along the path to tell you where you'll be heading. The boards path are solely a creamy white with only the backgrounds adding any color or something appealing to the eye for players to look at. Not much is going on in the background like previous games where Goomba Houses would be just around in places weird architecture and signs just littered all over the place which is just really dissapointing because no board outside of Bowser's appears to be any fun out of the get-go. Toads Amusement Park is really big with only a couple of truly capable branching paths. Boos Horror House or whatever has a neat vibe to it but with the mechanic of Red Boo's controlling the bridges and mini games sort of makes having fun with this stage kind of a hassle. Goombas Greedy Gala used to be my favorite but only recently did i realize that this area is so tiny, with 4 paths and three of them being 35 space grids and the other being a 10 space circle around back to the roulette wheel. Not to mention the only natural way to exit the 3 grids is to lose a dice roll against goomba himself, so the idea of keeping this boards game flow to it is completely up to chance. Shy Guy Jungle is a couple of 50 space grids connected by a couple of bridges which is really dull. Koopas Beach Soiree is the least fun looking with Goomba Galas 4 path setup but with the same amount of chance of choosing where to go, though with the board being quite larger the random path choices make this stage feel more tedious than the rest. Again Bowser's stage has the most interest to it with bridges that change direction after three people cross and losing items coins or stars if you cross Bowser.
Yeah the Boards are kind of bland but whether or not the stages has intricate depth or design only mattered if the music wasn't good. Which Mario Party 1-5 have avoided that problem, excluding Mario Party 4. Mario Party 4 is the only Mario Party of the original 5 where the music is just plain dull while Mario Party 1 2 and 3 all had really lively music. This becomes a problem right at the beginning where the music is carnival-esque, the menu music is really dull, minigame music is barely got any pep in it. Sound design just sucks in this game to the point Daisy sounds utterly hilarious and out of place with her melancholy "yaay..!".
Theres plenty of problems but lets cut the crap and get through them, The dice roll being random is the dumbest idea ever because the diceroll can also revert to numbers it already displayed immediately before and getting a number you want is a crapshoot. The regular mini mushroom is worthless because you have to buy it, land within 5 spaces of a pipe and hit the number you need while using the mini mushroom. If you want to go through a pipe just get a Super mini mushroom so you have 10 spaces capable, besides some really good minigames can only be done mini sized and are rarely immediately after a pipe. The amount of ways the game will "randomly" select characters to teleport trade or etc is annoying. The game speed in really slow, like unusually slow. The minigames as usual range from crappy and uninspired to actually fun but this is a real mixed bag. Bowser minigames are a cool idea but are a little odd some are too easy like the Pop Balloon game while the Fruits of Doom Game is completely rigged towards non human players, though all minigames beside the Fruits of Doom game are pretty balanced and fair.
Final thoughts:
Like every Mario Party there is plenty of fun to be had but 4 is the weakest of the lot and shouldn't be bought for anymore than 35 bucks or at least bundled with something else. I really recommend 2 and 5 over all others but Mario Party 4 leaves alot to be desired.
