Product Description

Two of gaming's all-time classics are reborn on DS. Stories tell of a land of yore, now shrouded by centuries of time forgotten, called Ys. Despite its great knowledge, endless wealth, and bountiful prosperity, a sudden and unexpected cataclysm devastated the realm. Soon, its memory had faded completely from the minds of man. Centuries later, a young adventurer named Adol set sail to explore the world and leave his mark on history. During his travels, he learned of the tragic tale of Esteria, a once prosperous island now inexplicably engulfed by a crippling storm. Adol plotted a course for the besieged isle, curious to unravel the mystery... Available to North American audiences for the first time, this ultimate translation delivers the most substantial version of the famous Ys story ever made. Two games in one, Ys was released separately overseas, but North American gamers get them together. One of the longest-running, most beloved action RPGs of all-time, Ys has features exclusive to DS including 3D graphics, multiplayer, touch support, and more.

I've played earlier versions, both on original systems and emulators, and I never get very far because of the odd fighting system. Basically in earlier versions you just run into enemies to harm them, and you have to run into them perfectly or they hurt you. This remake fixes that, you actually bush a button to swing your sword. I died two times figuring that out. After that it was great.

I really like the music, it's true to the original, kinda rock music.

The map graphics are well done, they are normal 3D graphics for the DS, not great but get the job done. The characters and monsters are also well done, in fact I really like the monsters. It was fun entering a new area to see the monsters. When the monsters are larger than normal and get along a wall half of them tend to be cut off, but there aren't that many larger than normal monsters anyway.

The layout of the Dungeons and Towns is also true to the original, I've been watching IPAT: Ys Book I & II on youtube when I get stuck and I can follow him exactly, every door, every turn, every treasure is the same. Some of the overworld maps are different though, not a big deal, town A is in a general north direction and Dungeon B in a general west direction. They had to do this because they made the overworld maps a lot larger. Warning on IPAT though, he swears, not as bad as some youtube, but pretty bad.

Ah, another thing, they use the swear word for Dang in this translation. Video games that swear bug me, why do they need to swear? I see no reason for swearing, especially for a game like this that younger players are going to be playing. I used to think if the game was for a Nintendo system then it would be safe, but this word slipped in somehow. I took off two stars on 'overall' because of swearing.

Fun I put 5 however, as it is very fun, and I recommend it. If you can get past the odd fighting system of the originals I would play them also. Originals is to remakes as books is to movies, the book is usually better.

Wow, long review, hope it helps.

This game is going to appeal mainly to fans of oldschool RPG's, and I might add that this game is a little bit of an oddball for a couple of reasons.

First of all, even though the DS has several RPG's available for it, I found that a lot of DS RPG's tend to be lacking in content and substance. While this game is old fashioned (don't expect an overly complex plot), I already found it to be relatively meaty. The game does ask you to explore and find things out on your own, which should really give you a sense of accomplishment when you actually to find stuff. Fighting and leveling seems a little bit too easy, but the game makes up for it in other ways, such as by providing large, maze-like dungeons to bug the heck out of you (a delight for true dungeon crawlers). What you get with this game is a genuine and sincere RPG without any gimmicks and with enough varied content to keep you entertained.

Another thing about this game that is unusual is the graphics, which are both good and bad. This game is a remake of an old 2D game, and at some point I have to question the decision to make the game "3D." First of all, the game isn't fully 3D; it's one of those hokey pseudo-3D games that reeks of the infatuation with superficial 3D prevalent in the 1990's--even in games where 3D doesn't belong, complete with the poor execution. What you get are fairly crude and ugly 3D renderings of the environments (like something I designed in my middle school CAD class) with little 2D sprites pasted over it, all drawn from the same perspective. As a result, the game is uglier than it actually needs to be--they should have either kept it 2D or worked harder to make the 3D more lovely, which we know is possible because of the beautiful Final Fantasy remakes present on the DS (even simple, old-school games such as FF3). If you're nostalgic for hideous PS1 games, this game is definitely for you! That being said, most of the 2D graphics are great, such as the beautiful character portraits for several NPC's that are sure to warm the hearts of any JRPG fan.

Overall I highly recommend this game. It stands out from the rest, and if you like RPG's a lot and have a DS, you really need to have this game as part of your collection.

One person gave this game five stars already without even playing it. This game was FANTASTIC on the Turbo Duo. In fact, this is one of the best RPGs ever made. Final Fantasy actually borrowed concepts from this game later on. You really can't understand how incredible this game is (no joke) until you've played it on the Turbo Duo. This is a very influential, years ahead of its time, still continues to inspire today, yet very little known game. However, this version is terrible. They made the game 3-D, the colors seem to all blend together making it hard to make distiction with the sprites, and the music sounds horrible. This game looks like it was put together by amateurs who are huge fans of this game but don't know what they're doing. The only good thing about it is the cinemas because they have really good graphics. However, the cinemas don't seem to enhance the game like they did in the original; they just exist. What you're left with is this crummy game that people would never believe that the original was actually WAY better than the final fantasy games that copied this. Seriously, the super nintendo version is better than this. Do not get this game.

I had the first Ys as a kid, and I loved it, I played it a great deal, so it's just a flood of good memories to play this one. I have no idea how much has changed, since the alteration of the graphics from what I remember has me feeling like it's a whole new game in many ways. For all that I played it a great deal, I find myself only vaguely connecting the two games, and for the people who liked the old fashioned action games like this, it's a must have.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great game for "Old School RPG" fans.

Legacy of Ys Books I & II is basically a compilation of the first two games in the Ys series. Both games came out a long time before Final Fantasy 7 brought RPG console games into the mainstream, and this game still feels like it was brought out of a time capsule into today's market. Yes, the graphics look better than they did back then, but it still suffers from a lack of innovation of current RPGs. That's not to say that it is a bad game, far from it. It is a very good update of a classic series and has a feel that is very reminicent of earlier Zelda games but with more roleplaying elements. You can buy this game on the Wii Store, but it feels better as a handheld title. The co-op mode is misleading. It is just a minigame rather than playing through the story co-op with a friend. It's unfortunate but understandable. If you are looking for a challenging RPG with great cut-scenes and story, then look no further. However, it may be a little to "hard-core" for some gamers. The bonus Soundtrack CD is a great addition as well.
