Product Description

The Atari 7800 was a sleek and capable videogame console released in 1986. While it had a solid offering of its own games, the 7800 featured a prime system feature: full, built-in compatibility with the Atari 2600. While consoles of the past could play Atari 2600 games through the use of an optional adapter, the 7800 accepted these cartridges right in the main slot and played them without any extra add-ons. The Atari 7800 was originally designed to succeed the Atari 5200 in 1984, but the system's launch was shelved when Atari was sold to new owners who wanted to focus on the computer market instead. The console was, instead, officially launched two years later in response to Nintendo and SEGA entering the US home console market with the Nintendo Entertainment System and Master System respectively. Many of the console's planned features, such as a high score saving cartridge, were never released. With the 7800 launch, Atari put a focus on "budget" gaming, with many games selling for less than $19.99. Because the system was all ready to go back in 1984, most of the launch titles were arcade titles from several years prior. The system was very capable in visuals as seen in games like the bundled Pole Position II. But its sound system lacked: the system designers created a cheap sound chip that could be included in cartridges, but to keep costs low, Atari limited the sound chip in very few titles. With Nintendo locking up third-parties with its two-year exclusivity agreement, Atari also had a hard time convincing third-party companies to produce games for its console – as a result, the company went after the rights to popular games that were available only for computers. Its delayed release, its cancelled peripherals, and a lack of financial backing from the company's new owners all combined to ensure that Atari 7800 would never see any success beyond being a sexier way of playing Atari 2600 titles.

The 7800 the pros and cons
4 Stars
The 7800 the pros and cons
The 7800 is a good system equal to the NES in alot of ways. Its short comingings to the NES are the games the 7800 games are good but simple most are arcade ports Nintendo put more ram into the game chips to give you more screens and more affects also the joystick is more hand cramping than the Nintendo "D" pad controller the NES has composit out against the 7800's RF out but all in all its still a great system because of its backward compatability with the 2600 and it has close to perfect emulation of the real arcade games if your an Atari fan its a must have!

The Atari 7800 is an amazing game system! The games are much more addicting and fun than the games we have today. Although the controllers might take some getting use to I think it is well worth it! The seller got the 7800 to me really quick and was even kind enough to ship an adapter cord with it! If you love old school video games or just need a new outlet of entertainment than I'd highly recommend the Atari 7800.

Well I personally like Atari Games because of the retro effect of them and seen and got this off here. It is a good system (not as good as the NES but still good) that enables you to play your old Atari games from the 2600 and the new 8-bit 7800 games on one system(it cant play the 5200 games because of well... it is a piece of crap because of the controller scheme and it wouldn't work with the simple 7800 controller)Anyways it has some great games for it like Xevious and Joust. But warning it only takes an exact power cable and with very few 3rd party manufacturers around the power cable can be expensive so buy one with the ac adapter included. And another thing is the 2600 controller is compatible so you can easily play your 2600 games on the system like the good old days instead of using the 7800 controller with could be a lot better since it don't have a great design(but note they don't get messed up as easily as on the 5200 where they broke within hours of gameplay(once again the reason why the 5200 is terrible) but its still nice.

Was not very happy with this purchase. Game system is modified to use a different power supply. Seller made no mention of this fact. When the game system arrived I had to open it up to access the power jack. I thought I was paying for a normal stock Atari 7800.
