Product Description

Cichorium intybus, also known as chicory, is a versatile plant that has been used as a coffee substitute for centuries. Chicory root has a long history of being roasted and ground to make a coffee-like beverage, and the plant remains a popular alternative to coffee to this day.

Chicory as a coffee substitute has its roots in ancient times, and was used as early as the 18th century in Europe as a way to stretch coffee supplies during times of shortage. Over time, chicory coffee became a popular beverage in its own right, and the practice of adding chicory to coffee to create a unique and flavorful blend became widespread.

One of the key benefits of chicory as a coffee substitute is its caffeine-free nature. Unlike coffee, chicory does not contain caffeine, making it a great alternative for those who are sensitive to caffeine or who prefer to limit their caffeine intake. Chicory also has a mild, slightly bitter flavor that is reminiscent of coffee, making it an appealing alternative for those who enjoy the taste of coffee but prefer to avoid caffeine.

To make chicory coffee, the roots of the plant are first roasted to release their flavor and aroma. The roasted roots are then ground into a fine powder and can be brewed just like regular coffee. Chicory coffee can be enjoyed black, or it can be blended with regular coffee to create a unique and flavorful beverage.

I have been drinking chicory for quite a few years now. I started drinking it when I was trying to give up coffee. I never went back to coffee and enjoy about a cup a day of my favorite brand of chicory tea.

This is the first time I have tried chicory root that has been dried and cut.

This is a foil lined bag of 100% organic chicory root. The only ingredient is chicory root. The origin is Poland. It is Non GMO and gluten free. The manufacturer is in Germany. It is 1.76 ounces/ approximately a 1/2 cup.

To make: I made a tea out of it. I added a little less than 1 tablespoon of the chicory root to a strainer in a cup. I poured about 1 cup of boiling water over it. I let it sit longer than I should have just because I forgot it.

The flavor: Using the measurements I did, I have a light to medium cup of tea. It tastes very much like coffee with a slight licorice taste also. It is a caramel color. Not dark like coffee or like my other chicory (with other herbs) tea.

I am very happy with this and look forward to trying my own tea blends with it.

Got this to try and make chicory coffee ala Cafe Du Monde, immediately burned the first batch (too fresh, needed drying/roasting), and had to buy another packet. So far, I haven't gotten there, but the ratio should be around 3 parts coffee to 1 part chicory.

I love coffee, but I cannot drink it at night. It keeps me awake if I drink it too late in the day. Consequently, I have been looking for a coffee substitute I enjoy. So, I thought I would try Naturegrail’s 100% Raw Chicory Root, Non-Roasted.

I was not sure how to prepare this, so I did what I thought would work. I ground some chicory in my electric grinder. The smell was wonderful! Then, I brewed it like I would coffee. I enjoyed it. It tastes a lot like coffee. It smells wonderful too!

I started wondering what kind of health benefits chicory might have, so I did some research. It is beneficial! It helps digestion. It even helps improve heart health! It reduces arthritis pain and helps in weight loss. It helps with kidney ailments and might even have anticancer properties! It also helps with constipation and boosts immune systems.

Wow! I feel like I struck it rich! I am sure glad I made this discovery!

Vine Customer Review of Free Product( What's this? )
I have recently tried chicory root tea (in powder form) so I was excited to try this. Because it's not roasted, it actually tastes less robust than the chicory root tea powder. I do like it and am giving it 5 stars because it is also ORGANIC! So many pesticides are used in tea making, so buying organic is key for me.

The package is small, and there are no brewing instructions. I started out with 1 teaspoon per 8 oz of boiling water. I added a few drops of stevia. It is also great with a dash of nut milk.

If you're just dipping your toes into the world of chicory root tea, this is the perfect size to try before you take the plunge. Does it taste like coffee? No. But is it enjoyable? Yes! It's a very robust herbal, earthy, and nutty drink that grows on you. I like that there are no added flavors so I can customize it myself with vanilla, cinnamon, and cocoa to switch things up.

I make 1 cup of tea with 1 teaspoon of it, caramel color and light in flavor. I love chicory and the flavor was a little lighter than expected compared to the amount used in the cup, I believe it was due the size of the pieces. I even ate some of the pieces and I am ok with its bitterness, however, I was ready for a full-flavored chicory tea and it didn't dissolve well into the boiling water. The chicory root pieces are good for tea lovers looking for a mild flavored tea.

I love having chicory in tea form. It has so many amazing benefits, it is very immune boosting and full of minerals and vitamins. It helps with liver, gut, kidney health and so much more. I love that it is organic and is not from China. The package seems small but a very little amount is needed to prepare a tea. It came quickly and well packaged. Good to have on hand for the cold days.

I have tried chicory coffee and find it enjoyable. I used this chicory root to steep as a tea which was very mild. I prefer chicory powder so I won’t be reordering this.
