There was resounding positive feedback from long-time supporters after they watched eager riders test out Albany’s new motocross track this week.

Stakeholders and supporters were invited to the still under-development Albany Motorsport Park on Wednesday for the 2.4km track’s official testing day.

It marks an important milestone for the track that has been under construction since early 2023.

It can now be further fine-tuned based on the feedback of the experienced riders who took part in testing ahead of a targeted opening date in May, once construction of a new Albany Motorcycle Club clubhouse has been completed.

Former Great Southern Motorplex Group chairman Theo Newhouse said it was exciting to see riders enjoying the track for the first time after many years campaigning for the park.

“Seeing these guys out on it today, particularly the little kids, is so positive,” he said.

“Club events here are just going to be great, we’ll definitely get some inter-club events here as well and we’re working with Motorcycling WA to get a national event here.”

A vantage point between the under-construction clubhouse and the track’s start line allowed the small crowd to watch the bikes race around the entire track, which will set it apart from many other motocross venues.

“Most tracks you can’t see it all and you have to walk around to different parts, but here you can set yourself up,” Mr Newhouse said.

“The track itself has lots of challenges and Willie (Thomson) has done a great job with the design of the jumps.

“We’re looking forward to seeing the club expanding once it’s all open.”

After completing several laps of the track Jack Fuller said the surface was “really good” and that there were some good advanced features in the design.

“It’s got a lot of features that are easy to be rolled, but you are rewarded if you take them on,” he said.

“It was exciting to be out there and see it’s all been worth the effort.”

The project has been developed with the support of the City of Albany which also helped secure Federal and State funding.

City CEO Andrew Sharpe said this day was a long time coming and the motocross circuit will be one of the premier circuits in the State.

“Projects of this scale are never simple or straightforward,” he said.

“It is about patience, persistence and advocating for what you believe is good for the community.

“The City aims for the precinct to provide somewhere safe, convenient and welcoming for our motorsport community to be able to network, exercise and have fun here in Albany.”
