Description: There are four varieties of Aeonium canariense. At first glance they can all look very similar to each other, but they are all very different and beautiful in their own way. A distinguishing feature of all four varieties is the velvety soft foliage which is covered in hundreds of tiny glandular hairs.

This particular variety has a very distinct viscid or sticky feel and is probably the least hairy of the four varieties. Plants tend to be quite robust and strong growing and will form a large cup-shaped rosette developing a few offsets over time. The foliage is generally a lime green in colour but will often show minor shades of pinks and yellows throughout the summer months or when stressed.

Apart from visual appearances, the true botanical differences between each variety is determine by minute characteristics within the inflorescences (the whole flowering structure).

Plant Care: All the Aeonium canariense varieties make interesting potted specimens and are beautiful plants to grow. Plants will handle a good amount of shade BUT grow in good light to achieve the best colours, avoiding the very hot afternoon sun of the plants may burn.

Origins & Distribution: Canary Islands (El Hierro & La Palma)

Comments: Some botanists now recognise and have reclassed the four Aeonium canariense varieties to subspecies status. This is now more correctly known as Aeonium canariense ssp. christii. To avoid immediate confusion we will retain the old name for now
