Annual ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum), a multipur-pose European import, is often chosen as a living sod cover crop in vegetable and fruit crops. Its vigorous root system tenaciously holds the soil against erosion while improving soil organic matter levels, increasing water ...

A field experiment was conducted at research farm of Department of Agronomy, Forages and Grassland Management, CSK HPKV, Palampur during Rabi 2015-16 to assess the effect of date of sowing and nitrogen fertilization on herbage yield and nutritive value of annual rye grass. The experiment was laid out in factorial randomized block design with three replications, consisting of fifteen treatment combinations. Annual ryegrass produced significantly highest total green (662.52 q/ha) and dry (136.37 q/ha) forage yields with the application of 160 kg N/ha under sowing time of 2 nd fortnight of October. Early sowing in 2 nd fortnight of October as well as application of 160 kg N/ha resulted in significantly higher CPC and CPY. Also, the significantly minimum NDF content (41.76%) was recorded with the application of 160 kg N/ha. The higher values of NPK content and uptake were recorded under sowing time of 2 nd fortnight of October as well as application of 160 kg N/ha. Soil properties did not affected significantly at the end of experiment except soil available nitrogen, which increased with increasing levels of nitrogen levels up to 120 kg N/ha.

Assessment of herbage yield and quality traits of perennial ryegrasses from a national variety evaluation scheme2013 •
SUMMARYPerennial ryegrass evaluation schemes categorize varieties into three maturity (early, intermediate and late) and two ploidy (diploid and tetraploid) groups, and compare the relative yield, persistence and nutritive quality of varieties within these groups. The present study compared these groups for herbage yield, dry matter (DM) concentration and, using near infrared reflectance spectroscopy (NIRS), four quality characteristics (in vitro content of digestible dry matter (CDDM), water-soluble carbohydrate (WSC) and crude protein (CP) concentrations, and buffering capacity). A total of 1208 plots were sown across 5 years in Irish Recommended List trials and then harvested 6–7 times in each of 2 harvest years. This also allowed an assessment of the effect of sward age. Maturity group had no significant effect on annual herbage yield, quality or DM concentration except for in vitro CDDM (P<0·01) but differed significantly for in vitro CDDM (P<0·01), WSC concentration (P&l...

Assessment of perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) genotypes under Latvia agro-ecological conditions2021 •
Within the frame of the Nordic/Baltic public-private partnership ’PPP for pre-breeding in perennial ryegrass’ various activities were performed, including assessment of L. perenne (Lp) genotypes under agro-ecological conditions of Latvia. This article summarizes the data obtained in two harvest years for 19 intermediate tetraploid (4x) Lp genotypes. In order to compare the results obtained in ryegrass with performance of grass interspecies hybrids (Fl), which become especially relevant in the recent years, two varieties, developed in Latvia – Lolium × boucheanum Kunth. ‘Saikava’ and × Festulolium ‘Vizule’ were included in the experiment. Various scores were performed, including evaluation of regrowth, intensity of culm development, sward cover, crown rust (Puccinia coronata) susceptibility, etc. The dry matter yield (DMY) and fodder quality were also determined. It can be concluded that the genotypes showed relatively good results in the first two harvest years. Wintering conditions...

Annual ryegrass (Lolium rigidum Gaud.), traditionally utilised as a pasture species, has become the most problematic and difficult-to-control weed across grain production regions in Australia. Annual ryegrass has been favoured by the adoption of conservation tillage systems due to its genetic diversity, prolific seed production, widespread dispersal, flexible germination requirements and competitive growth habit. The widespread evolution of herbicide resistance in annual ryegrass has made its management within these systems extremely difficult. The negative impacts of this weed on grain production systems result in annual revenue losses exceeding $93 million (AUD) for Australian grain growers. No single method of management provides effective and enduring control hence the need of integrated weed management programs is widely accepted and practiced in Australian cropping. Although annual ryegrass is an extensively researched weed, a comprehensive review of the biology and management...
