"Spiritual America is the first publication to encompass the entire range of Prince's work - the early "rephotography," his gangs, jokes, and hoods, along with his various writings. Far more than a chronologica, retrospective monograph, however, Spiritual America, conceived and designed by Prince, is part examination of a decade of work, part commentary on the current state of popular culture as evidenced in our mass media." Vintage offset print poster for Richard Prince's landmark "Spiritual America" exhibition at Institut Valencia d'Art Modern (IVAM), which ran from September 22 through November 30, 1989. The exhibition poster features Prince's "rephotograph" of a film still photograph of the 1968 black Dodge Charger driven by two hit men in the classic chase scene in the 1968 neo-noir "Bullitt," directed by Peter Yates and starring Steve McQueen. Prince appropriated the name "Spiritual America" several times throughout his career. Originating from a 1923 photograph by Alfred Stieglitz, a close-up of the flanks and groin of a gelded horse, the title was first, and most famously, used by Prince in 1983 for his "rephotography" of the infamous and problematic 1975 photograph of a nude, prepubescent Brooke Shields. Prince has since used the name for a short lived Lower East Side gallery, his watershed IVAM exhibition and its exhibition catalog, as well as his 2007/2008 retrospective exhibition at the Walker Art Center and Guggenheim Museum. 38.50 x 26.25 inches. Archivally framed in a museum-quality frame with UV plexiglass. Outer frame measures 30.5 x 42.75 inches. Fine. Shipping billed at cost.
