<p>At the 1960 Rome Olympic Games, Abebe Bikila ran barefoot through the Italian capital, an occasion made even more atmospheric by being the first Olympic marathon to be run at night, crossing the line in what was then a world best of 2:15:16.2. Between 1960 and 1966, Bikila won 12 out of the 13 marathons he contested. Despite an appendectomy six weeks before the 1964 Tokyo Games hand, Bikila forced the pace from 15km, eventually crossing the line in 2:12:11.2, which took nearly two minutes off the previous world best.</p>

<p>The Museum of World Athletics&trade;, or MOWA, is a 3D fully virtual museum of athletics, which will take you on an interactive journey through the history of athletics, highlighting many of the legends of the sport.<br /><br />MOWA is the first sports museum to be established in the digital world, bringing a new level of innovation and creative technologies to the world of sport. The museum gives visitors a unique 3D online experience, highlighting key athletics champions from each continent, and celebrating each edition of the World Athletics Championships.<br /><br />Through realistic interactive content, including state-of-the-art 360 photographic reproduction of items donated by the athletes, MOWA&rsquo;s four galleries bring to life the stories of athletics.<br /><br />Among the exhibits are competition items &ndash; clothing, shoes, trophies and equipment &ndash; donated by or own behalf of many of the greatest athletes in history, including Paavo Nurmi, Jesse Owens, Fanny Blankers-Koen, Herb Elliott, Irena Szewinska, Carl Lewis, Marie-Jose Perec, Michael Johnson, Jan Zelezny, Allyson Felix, Usain Bolt, Valerie Adams and many more.<br /><br />The Museum of World Athletics is free to access and is available with text commentary in English, French and Spanish.</p>
