Vera series 13 has come to an end - but will DCI Stanhope and DS Joe Ashworth be back for another series in the near future?

The short answer is yes - ITV have confirmed that Vera will return in future episodes - however fans may be disappointed to hear the show’s next series will be even shorter than the last. Vera series 14 will also be Brenda Blethyn's last series, and therefore will bring an the end to the show.

Vera’s final mysteries will take place over the course of two feature length episodes, filming for which is taking place this spring. The two episodes are expected to air in 2025.

Brenda Blethyn will return one last time in the role of DCI Vera Stanhope, and David Leon is expected to be returning to Vera’s side as DS Joe Ashworth. This is after he returned to the popular long-running drama this year following DS Aiden Healy (Kenny Doughty)’s departure from the series.

With Blethyn having revealed ahead of series 13’s release that she was unsure about continuing in the role following Doughty’s exit, it’s great news that more episodes are on the way, but it's also no surprise the show is now coming to an end after 14 series.

Speaking about how David Leon’s return to the show had her “overjoyed” and ready to work on the show again, despite the heartbreak of having to say goodbye to Kenny Doughty, the award-winning actress was previously open about how she still wasn't certain how many more series she would film.

“I wouldn’t have continued if David had not agreed to come back. I just didn’t want to start another board game with somebody else when I know I’m not going to do many more,” she said in a statement ahead of series 13.

Announcing her departure from the series after 14 seasons, Blethyn shared: "Working on Vera has been a joy from beginning to end and I’m sad to be saying Cheerio. But I am so proud of our achievements over the last fourteen years. I’ll be forever grateful to the wonderful Ann Cleeves who created Vera, and to Elaine Collins who saw fit to cast me in the role."

Vera is available to watch now on ITVX.
