Sony PlayStation 5 Pro launch later this year according to analyst
Sony is gearing up to announce a new version of the PlayStation 5 console called Pro, according to an analyst interviewed by CNBC. This information aligns with previous leaks and is also a result of lowering sales expectations for the existing PlayStation 5 console from 25 million to 21 million for this year. The company anticipates a gradual decline in sales for the current year.
The upcoming Holiday season would be an ideal time for the console announcement, roughly three years following the lead-up to the unveiling of the PlayStation 4 Pro.
“There seems to be a broad consensus in the game industry that Sony is indeed preparing a launch of a PS5 Pro in the second half of 2024,”
— Serkan Toto, CEO of Tokyo-based games consultancy Kantan Games
An additional advantage that could favor this announcement is the impending release of Grand Theft Auto 6. Many analysts expect it to be a driving force for the entire gaming market. It’s also a great opportunity to introduce updated consoles capable of delivering the highest quality and performance in this upcoming title.
According to previous reports, Sony is working on a processor with 60 Compute Units, likely based on the AMD RDNA3 architecture. The processor itself may have up to 64 processors, but some will likely be disabled to ensure yields and console availability at the desired level.
Additional information suggests that the PlayStation 5 Pro may feature 16 GB of GDDR6 memory at a speed of 18 Gbps. Previous leaks had pointed to a release date in November.
