Red Charm Peony – How I Have Discovered this Flower.
Today I would like to write about one of my favorite peonies – Red Charm peony. It has very beautiful flowers with full looking bloom in deep pink, or almost red. The photos are not really showing well its true colour. The flowers have a set of smooth rounded lower petals and then multiple fringed petals in the center.
Besides great looking shape the flowers also have beautiful characteristic peony scent. I have discovered this amazing peony two years ago during Oshawa’s Annual Peony Show and Festival. This beauty was (and still is ) growing in the Oshawa Valley Botanical Gardens, which takes part of this festival at the beginning of June of each year.
The end of May and the beginning of June is peonies blooming season in our area and some of them are still in bloom. This year we have almost constant rain for a few months, so many peonies were blooming later than usually and those which have bloomed despite the rain, didn’t last too long.
Below you can see a close-up of Red Charm flower, which I have photographed during past year Peony’s Festival in Oshawa.
Red Charm Peony in Our Garden.
I really like this peony and I was looking for it and finally found it in our local garden nursery – Vandermeer. I have purchased there one Red Charm peony last year sometimes in May or June and planted it in our garden close to the entrance to the garden where it receives at least 6 hours of light during the warmer part of the year.
Last year it was just seating there and had no flowers. This year it has grown bigger and finally bloomed around the beginning of June, but had only one flower. Because of almost constant rains we had here, the flower lasted only about one week. Here is how this peony looked in our garden when it was blooming.
I hope our Red Charm peony will have many more flowers next year and will bloom for a much longer period. I think it is certainly worth keeping in the garden. It looks quite similar to my other favorite peony – Red Grace, so you might like to check out both of them.
