The Chelsea Flower Show named its Plant of the Decade, in celebration of 10 years of its Plant of the Year competition, in 2020.

The Plant of the Year competition first launched in 2010 and, each year, saw one impressive creation honoured with a prize. To mark a decade of the awards in 2020, the RHS announced a special Plant of the Decade winner.

This meant that the ten past Plant of the Year winners battled it out for the new prestigious title, through a people's choice vote, and one came out on top.

As well as these titles, the event awards a number of medals and accolades recognising excellence in a variety of other areas.

There are prizes for the best garden products, the RHS Floristry and Floral Design competition and, of course, prizes for the overall Chelsea Garden Show winners, which are divided into a number of categories. As well as the traditional Show Gardens, there are also balcony gardens celebrating smaller spaces and even a new category for 2022, All About Plants. 2021 even saw the introduction of Houseplant Studios, which create indoor gardening displays.

That Plant of the Decade winner was 2015's Viburnum plicatum f. tomentosum Kilimanjaro Sunrise ('Jww5').

While the shrub with pretty white flowers has been been voted the nation's favourite, it was 2010 plant Streptocarpus 'Harlequin Blue' with its blue and yellow petals, which was named the RHS President's Winner.

In 2019, Sedum takesimense 'Atlantis' took the Plant of the Year top spot.

According to Chelsea organisers the sedum topped the list because it’s: "An attractive, easy to grow, versatile and multi-functional plant."

The sedum ticks many boxes for gardeners as it’s drought resistant and its flowers are attractive to insect pollinators.

It was discovered on the banks of Lake Michigan by Dave Mackenzie, who specialises in plants for ground cover, green roofs and walls.
