Annual. Stems 10-50 cm, erect or ascending. Leaf sheaths glabrous or sparsely pilose. Leaf blades 5-20 cm x 2-5 mm, ciliate on upper surface. Panicle 1-7 x 0.5-3 cm, erect, very dense, broadly oblong or ovoid, branches and pedicels usually much shorter than spikelets. Spikelets 10-20 x 2-3 mm, oblong-lanceolate, densely crowded, subsessile, pubescent or glabrous, with 5-10 florets. Glumes narrow, lower 3-4 mm, upper 5-7 mm. Lemma 7-8 x 2 mm, oblong-lanceolate, margin not angled, shortly bifid at apex, often concave on back when fully ripe; awn 7-9 mm, flattened and twisted at base, patent or recurved at maturity. Palea slightly shorter than lemma. Anthers 0.25-0.5 mm. 2n = 14. Fl. 4-7. Dry open grassland, waste places, cultivated fields, s.l-2250 m.
