A Florida native plant that is believed to be a natural hybrid of Tillandsia fasciculata v. densispica x balbisiana. Found only in the Everglades region of South Florida, though with the possibility of occurrence anywhere the two species cohabit. The plants have bronzy foliage which forms a bulbous base with long, tapering leaves in a rosette with an upright vase shape. The inflorescence is very tall with a red scape, long, recurving bracts and a cluster of upright, long, bright red branches. Colorful and easy to grow.

A great native plant

T. x smalliana is a wonderful naturally occurring native hybrid between T, fasciculata and T. balbisiana. Veronica helped me pick out a beautiful one with a well formed scape that is getting ready to flower. She also helped me find 3 other native species. Since most of Florida's native tillandsias are either threatened or endangered, I appreciate that Tropiflora has been propagating them which helps take the pressure off wild populations. Being from Wisconsin, which obviously does not have any native tillandsias, I like having these bits of Florida to remind me of my visits there. T. x smalliana is a fine addition to my collection.
