The CD32 is a CD-ROM-based console that is basically a high-end Amiga contained within a small, grey box. It can do pretty much everything an Amiga can do, but with a few built-in extras, such as Red Book Audio (CD quality sound, streamed from the disc), CDTV compatibility, and backwards compatibility with older, 9-pin D-Sub (Atari-style) controllers of the ’80s and ’90s (including Sega Megadrive pads and existing Amiga mice and paddles).

The CD32 was launched in September 1993, but unfortunately it only stayed in production for less than a year, being discontinued in April 1994. In spite of that a number of great games came out for the system, because it was relatively easy to port Amiga games over to it. That did also unfortunately lead to some criticism, with some people (usually rivals) citing a lack of original games.

That said: the CD32 did have a number of exclusives released for it, and many of the ports that it received were enhanced over their Amiga predecessors, and they played smoother too.

With a few exceptions: in my opinion the CD32 versions of many Amiga games play even better than the originals they were ported from, because there’s little or no slowdown and no latency with the controls (which includes with a mouse, which the CD32 supports). The Amiga CD32 seems more than capable of handling whatever is thrown at it, which is why it still remains a favourite among retro gaming fans to this day. Myself included.
