Most Virgos are systematic, logical, and practical as they make decisions in life. Yet, this earth sign is a perfectionist at heart through consistent and diligent efforts. Both the Virgo and buttercup flourish best with specific attention to detail. Here are a few details from Igra World for success when growing and caring for buttercups:
- Try to plant buttercups in rich fertile soil. If this is not possible, there is still hope. They can grow in a dry or sandy environment, but a well-drained area where grass grows well is best.
- Shade is a buttercup's friend. Buttercups can grow in full or partial shade, but full sun is not recommended. These delicate flowers can get scorched by the sun.
- If you live in zones 4-7, it is best to plant buttercups in the spring. If you live in zones 8-11, plant them in autumn to get blooms in the spring.
- Buttercups should be watered regularly. Try to keep your well-drained soil moist for optimal growth.
- You can nourish your buttercups by using compost or an all-purpose fertilizer.
- If you live in a hotter zone, consider mulching the area your buttercups are planted to help keep your soil cool and moist.

We'd recommend veering away from the list above for the Virgo. However, there are several ways to help your relationship with a Virgo thrive.

- Ask their advice on a matter. However, be ready for an honest and potentially direct answer. Virgos enjoy being of help, and if they can put their critical thinking skills to work, they are in their element.

Virgo – Chrysanthemum
The chrysanthemum is Virgo’s star sign flower. As they bloom before the bitter cold sets in, they thrive no matter the weather. The Virgo and chrysanthemum are both resilient and strong. Due to their symmetric blooms, chrysanthemums strike a chord with the Virgo as they are perfectionists.
These hardy, durable, practically perfect flowers symbolize happiness, well-being, and friendship. In different parts of the world, the chrysanthemum has various meanings. Victorians used the chrysanthemum to show well-wishes and friendship. The Chinese traditionally offer this beautiful flower to their elders as a symbol of longevity and good luck in the home. Known as the “mum” in Australia, the chrysanthemum is the official flower of Mother’s Day. And in Belgium and Austria, chrysanthemums are used as memorial flowers to honor loved ones.
As with many other flowers, chrysanthemums have different meanings depending on color. Take a look:
- Violet chrysanthemums are used for well-wishes.
- Yellow chrysanthemums symbolize sorry or neglected love.
- Red chrysanthemums, of course, represent deep passion and love.
- White chrysanthemums embody honesty and loyalty.
Chrysanthemum Care
Caring for these hardy flowers is rather simple. Of course, you’ll want to water your plant consistently throughout spring, summer, and fall. The best time to water is in the early morning - down to about 6-8 inches in the ground. Ideally, applying water to the base of the plant works best in order to prevent moisture from getting stuck in the thick foliage. A soaker hose works splendidly for this.
Chrysanthemums are pinched more than pruned. What does this mean? In the spring, when your plant reaches about 6 inches, simply pinch off 1 inch on each shoot. When this is repeated every 2-3 weeks until summer, your plant will blossom magnificently. If you’re tempted to cut it back in the winter, please refrain from doing so. The chrysanthemum will become hardier the following year if you allow it to do what it’s meant to do naturally. The spring will allow time for cleanup of the dead stems and foliage.
If you’re wondering if these fun plants can be divided, the answer is yes. They benefit from being divided every 3-4 years. If your chrysanthemum is no longer growing full and round, it may be time for it to be divided. We recommend doing this in the springtime. Get rid of the “woody” roots and replant the fresh roots in rich soil filled with organic matter.
Virgo – Poppy
And finally, the poppy.
Even though the poppy is vibrant in its color, it symbolizes peace and rest. Like the Virgo, the poppy is often seen as calm, collected, and restive. However, this misconception may be rather humorous to those who know Virgos well. In a group, Virgos are often the voice of reason without having to be abrasive or loud to make their point.
Poppies generally come in a variety of colors, including red, white, yellow, lilac, pink, and salmon. With multiple variations of the poppy, you get to decide which suits your garden the most.
Here are some popular options:
- The Oriental Poppy - best known for its massive blooms.
- The Opium Poppy – this one is illegal to grow throughout the US. Its blooms are incredibly beautiful. We only mention it as a warning. Do not grow these.
- The California Poppy boasts shades of purple, pink, orange, cream, and yellow. It’s native to California and the west coast. Because it has a shorter height, these poppies are ideal for planters.
- The Himalayan Poppy - tends to be the most challenging to grow as it is a short-lived perennial and requires evenly moist yet well-drained soil and a small amount of shade. However, the large blue blooms are remarkable to see.
- The Iceland Poppy is also a more challenging poppy to cultivate. Even though it is a perennial, it needs to be grown as an annual in much of the United States. The pastel shades of pink, orange, white, and yellow are not heat tolerant. And, unlike other poppies, these have a longer vase life.
Like the Virgo, the poppy is strong in its own soil, stands with confidence, and most enjoys being out in nature. Like the chrysanthemum, the poppy is a hardy flower that can tolerate some frost.
Poppy Care

Overall, poppies have a low-maintenance routine. Outside of the Oriental Poppy, you can sew poppies in just about any type of soil. To encourage growth, you will want to water your poppies weekly, especially if they are growing in arid, sandy conditions. Sure, they can handle drought, but it would be best to have consistent water. Most varieties of poppies prefer partial sun. Remember to deadhead the poppy as it will help prolong the bloom season. However, at the end of their bloom season, if the seed head on the plant, it can self-seed by dropping the seeds for years to come.
Whether it's the buttercup, chrysanthemum, or the poppy, all three are indicative of the Virgo in that all are hearty, respond best to specific care, and are breathtaking to watch as they grow and move through their life cycle.
