Japanese goldthread, also known as Coptis japonica,is a herbaceous perennial plant native to Japan,as the name suggests. It belongs to the family Ranunculaceae and is valued for its medicinal properties. In Japanese,it is called Kampo or Ogon and has been used in traditional Chinese and Japanese medicine for centuries. The plant has a slender, creeping rhizome with thin,thread-like roots, which gives it the common name goldthread. It has bright yellow, tubular flowers that bloom in spring and early summer. The leaves are small and divided into three lobes.Japanese goldthread contains various bioactive compounds, including berberine, which is responsible for many of its medicinal effects.Berberine has antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory,and antioxidant properties. It is used in traditional medicine to treat digestive disorders, reduce inflammation, and support liver and gastrointestinal health. In traditional Chinese medicine,Japanese goldthread is known as Huang Lian and is often used in combination with other herbs to treat conditions like diarrhea, dysentery, infections, and fevers. It is also used topically for skin conditions like eczema and acne.
