Finnmark plateau, the highland of Norway.

May the 2. my family and I drove to Lakselv in Finnmark to visit family. On the way to Lakselv we have to cross a part of
Finnmarksvidda. The Finnmark plateau or highland is Norway's largest plateau, with an area greater than 22,000 square kilometres. The plateau lies about 300 to 500 metres above sea level. Approximately 36% of Finnmark county lies on the plateau.

Finnmark is the northernmost county in Norway, the largest in extent and the smallest in the population. Finnmark is the most northwestern part of the mainland in Europe.

Where I live we are always surrounded of high mountains and fjords. It is always nice to experience the vast horizon and sky with clouds all around me. The view is not stopped by a steep mountain or high forest.

The plateau includes extensive birch woods, pine barrens, bogs, and glacially formed lakes. Finnmarksvidda is situated north of the Arctic Circle and is best known as the land of the once nomadic Sami people and their reindeer herds. Their shelters in the tundra, are still in use in winter time.

It was still snow on the plateau, but the spring has arrived, the rivers are free of ice and have lots of water from the melting snow.

Finnmarksvidda is located in the interior of the county and has a continental climate with the coldest winter temperatures in Norway: the coldest temperature ever recorded was −51.4 °C (−60.5 °F). When we crossed in mai it was around - 2 degrees in the evening sun. The temperature was nice to get out of the car and enjoy the view.

The fences you can see in the pictures are used in conjunction with the reindeer herds of the Sami people.

Hope you enjoy this little teaser from the Finnmark plateau. Have a great evening.

Best regards
Harald
