Charles Darwin wrote in a letter to Philip Henry Gosse, 2 June 1863:
"...How insects act with your Stanhopea I will not pretend to conjecture. In many cases I believe the acutest man could not conjecture without seeing the insect at work...
"P.S.—If the Flowers of the Stanhopea are not too old, remove pollen-masses from their pedicels, and stick them with a little liquid pure gum to the stigmatic cavity."

Stanhopea ___ 'Jersey Mystic' AM/RHS 21 July 1998 (connata x intermedia) -- exhibited by Eric Young Orchid Foundation (Jersey); documented in Orchid Review v.106(1224) p.327-328. 3 flowers on 1 cut inflorescence: N.S. 120mm wide; ds 60x37mm; ls 70x54mm; pet 54x35mm; lip 55x35mm.

Stanhopea [Spindleriana] (oculata x nigroviolacea) - Rudolf Jenny points out "As long as no hybrid with Stanhopea nigroviolacea or Stanhopea tigrina var. nigroviolacea as parent is registrated we don't know whether the registration authority will accept the parent as species (nigroviolacea), as variety, or simply as synonym of S. tigrina. If the RHS is accepting it only as [a] synonym of S. tigrina, then it will be Spindleriana as registrated earlier in this century. If they accept it as own species (nigroviolacea) it will need a different grex name. The same is true if the RHS will treat it as [a] variety. Unfortunately we don't know whether one parent of S. Spindleriana was originally tigrina or nigroviolacea, so I guess the RHS will treat it as [a] synonym and therefore S. Spindleriana would be the valid name for the cross..."
Note from Doug Pulley, 16 Nov 2002: "[the RHS] called it Spindleriana, because they only accept tigrina, not nigroviolacea."
Note from Nina Rach, 3 Dec 2003: "As seen in the July - September 2003 registration list of new orchid hybrids, the International Cultivar Registration Authority for Orchid Hybrids (published by the Royal Horticultural Society) has accepted Stanhopea nigroviolacea as a valid taxon. See: Stanhopea Bird of Prey (jenischiana x nigroviolacea)."
