Hosta Catalogue

This is a big hosta! It is almost 3 feet tall with very large shovel-like blue-green leaves with good substance. Leaves are slightly cupped, lightly corrugated and have rippled margins. Lavender flowers from mid-July into August.Part of Doug Beilstein's hybridizing program, it is a seedling from his very popular 'Brutus'. I love its dramatic deep leaf veins and upright habit.

Hybrid of H. Tokudama x H. sieboldiana from Walden West, 1989. Rich dark blue, thick, very large nearly round, 11"x 11" deeply cupped leaves, strongly seersuckered and puckered. Leaves powdery gray on the visible underside. This hosta sets the standard for cupping as it can be up to 4 inches deep, easily holding water for birds to bathe in. Near white flowers on upright scapes in July.

Hosta Above the Clouds is a new hybrid of H. Silver Moon x H. Liberty  from Hans Hansen of Walters Gardens Inc., 2020.  The cloudy silver-blue leaves are nearly round, slightly cupped and slightly corrugated at maturity.  Pale lavender flowers appear on 30-38 inch scapes in mid July 

This wide margined sport of Hosta Climax from Walters Gardens Inc. 2012, features large, 8 inch wide by 10 inch long green, heart-shaped leaves with incredibly striking, 3 inch wide yellow margins. Forms an impressive upright mound in the landscape; makes an excellent specimen. Pale lavender flowers in early summer on 36"scapes.

From renowned Hosta breeder Hans Hansen comes a new large gold hosta, Hosta Elatior hybrid x American Sweetheart. With golden yellow leaves, this is the perfect specimen for making a statement in the shade with its upright spreading habit and large smooth leaves. In midsummer, near white, tubular flowers appear with a very faint pale lavender central pattern on the interior petals. Plant in morning sun or filtered shade for best yellow color

Hybrid of H. Fortunei Aurea from K. Herrema, P. Ruh, 2000. Wide mound of very wavy, arching, twisted, lanceolate shaped foliage; 8"x 4" leaves greenish white with green speckles and streaks in centre, irregularly margined with dark green. Vigorous grower. Pale lavender flowers in July.

Coarsely textured mound of leathery, puckered, heart shaped to round leaves. Introduced in 2012 as a wide margined sport of Hosta Dick Ward, which is named for one of the most accomplished hosta breeders in the USA. Leaves display wide blue-green margins with chartreuse centres that become yellow in summer. Near white flowers on 28" scapes in early summer. 

Sport of Guacamole from B. Solberg, 2015. This hosta is a blue-green margined, yellow centred sport of Bob's H. Guacamole; it also has a nice light glaucous bloom that just gives it a nice frosting on the leaves. Ambrosia has fragrant flowers like Guacamole and takes bright light.

Sport of Squire Rich from Bob Kuk. Leaves 7 inches wide by 9 inches long, dark green centred with beautifully rippled 1 inch gold margins. Lavender flowers on 24 - 36 inch scapes in July. Coloration very subtle in spring with the leaf edges being apple green and the centre darker green but the leaf edges brighten up in the summer.

Sport of H. First Frost with extra wide margins, from Walters Gardens Inc. and H. Hansen, 2009.  Frosty blue leaves have bright yellow margins that lighten to creamy white in summer. Leaves 6 inches long by 4 inches wide, 6-8 vein pairs, flat, glaucous bloom on top as well as underneath, broadly ovate. Extremely showy hosta, very slow growth rate but worth it. Light lavender flowers from mid-July to mid-August.

Sport of Guacamole from J. and B. Diesen, 1998. Has a much wider green margin (2 ") than mother plant (5/8 "). Leaves 10"long by 8"wide, medium gold centre, green margin. Very Fragrant, large, pale lavender flowers in August on 36 inch scapes. Fast growth rate. Makes a gorgeous mound. We have lots of visitors asking about this hosta when they see and smell the flowers in bloom.

Sport of Hosta Lemon Snap. Just like it's parent, this hosta has beautiful red petioles. The leaves are puckered, shiny, green in the centre with a yellow edge that turns more chartreuse in the summer. Gorgeous purple flowers on red scapes in mid to late summer.

Hybrid of H. Cody x H. Dorset Blue from R. Solberg, 2006. Makes a small, neat mound of heart shaped blue leaves. Just a bit larger than a mini. Leaves 4 inches long by 3 inches wide, blue-green, 8 vein pairs, flat, glaucous bloom on top as well as the underside, lightly cupped, lightly folded, lightly corrugated, broadly ovate. Flowers in mid-July to mid-August.

Beautiful white edged sport of its parent plant Bridegroom, offering the same upwardly tipped leaf form. Leaves are 6 inches long by 4 inches wide, dark green centred with a margin that changes from yellow to creamy white. Medium growth rate. Bright purple flowers on 24 inch scapes in July. Hybridizer Mark Zilis and Jim Schwarz, 2011.

[H. clausa normalis F2 seedling × (H. 'Ogon Tsushima' x H. yingeri F2 seedling)] from Bob Solberg. Light green leaves 7 "long x 3 "wide, slightly shiny on top and bottom. Petioles are a beautiful beet red, leaves have a red vein visible on the border until about July 1. Purple flowers on beet red 36 "scapes mid July to mid August, seed pods also red and viable. Wonderful breeding possibilities with all the red in this plant.

Magnificent sport of Hosta Old Glory improving on an already beautiful hosta. Beyond Glory has a much wider 3 inch wide dark green border surrounding a chartreuse turning gold centre in summer. Pale lavender flowers on 29 inch scapes in mid-summer. As in Old Glory, situate this hosta in full morning sun, even some afternoon sun to bring out the colors.

Selected seedling from F. Shaw, P. Aden, 1986. Huge, beautiful cascading mound. A classic hosta you will definitely want as a specimen plant. Place in morning sun only to keep the blue longer. Leaves 16"x 12" widely ovate to wedge-shaped, thick dark blue-gray to dark blue green, slightly dimpled, strongly veined, edge rippled. Near white flowers on upright 4 foot scapes from late June to July.

This little hosta from Hans Hansen and Walters Gardens hybridizing delivers what other miniature hostas promised-with truly blue leaves. Compared to the ever popular 'Blue Mouse Ears', 'Blue Elf' has a similar short height but with larger leaves (about 2.5-3" across) and true powdery blue leaves, about the same color as 'Fragrant Blue'. Perfectly proportionate to the size of the plant, shorter flower spikes yield lavender flowers in in midsummer. 'Blue Elf' is the perfect size for fairy gardens or troughs! Not as easy to grow as Blue Mouse Ears though.

Sport of Fragrant Blue. Registered by Naylor Creek Nursery in 2004. A dome shaped mound. Leaf blade 6"x 4", powdery pale blue, irregularly margined cream turning yellow with celadon streaking and white flashes along the outer rim of the margin, dimpled, edge flat, leaf flat to convex, oval, good substanced. Petiole blue outlined in cream. Slightly fragrant lavender flowers in August. Site in light shade to retain the powdery bloom on the leaf surface.

This Hosta Halcyon sport (from W. Meyer, L. Klinkhamer, 2009) has wide, creamy white margins and a blue centre in spring. Margins brighten to white and may develop a unique green blush while the centre turns blue-green in summer. Lavender flowers in mid summer on 20-24"scapes. Needs a very specific location with morning sun to bring out the blue, yet avoidance of afternoon sun to reduce any burning of white edges. 

Sport of Blue Cadet from E. and J. Deckert, 2000. Hosta of the year for 2008. Adorable small hosta with thick, rounded heart shaped blue-green leaves. Thick substanced and covered with a thick underside bloom. Forms a perfectly symmetrical mound. Clusters of lavender, bell-shaped flowers emerge from balloon-like buds on perfectly proportioned scapes in early July.

A new sport of Hosta Ambrosia from Bob Solberg, 2015. Having plantaginea in its genes, this hosta will continue to push up new foliage through the summer months so you always have soft blue leaves present. It is a vigorous grower that forms a beautiful large mound of blue foliage. Very fragrant light lavender flowers arrive in late summer.

Sport of H. True Blue from D. Reath, R. Klehm, 1998. An arching mound of thick rich blue foliage, widely and irregularly margined chartreuse turning yellow, with streaks jetting toward the midrib, matt  above and a thick glaucous blue-gray below, seersuckered, leaf arching, convex, broadly ovate. Near white flowers in mid-June.

Hybrid of H. Frances Williams x H. Fall Bouquet, from Bill Meyer. A beautiful mound with rich blue foliage that deepens to blue-green late in the season. Leaves 9"long x 7" wide, almost round, heavily corrugated, slightly rippled, unruly and thick substanced. I think this hosta has the nicest blue color of any hosta. Petioles are a very attractive light mauve with matching mauve scapes carrying lavender flowers in July.

Hybrid of Spilt Milk x Abiqua Drinking Gourd. The cardboard like substance of this unruly blue hosta makes it stand out from all others. Leaves 15 inches long x 13 inches wide, intensely blue-green, slightly rippled, glaucous bloom on top and underneath, intensely corrugated, broadly ovate, cordate base. Lavender flowers on 29 "scapes in June to July, many seed pods form. I have had numerous double pods develop on my plant. Should have some interesting breeding possibilities.

Streaked form of Hosta Inspire Greatness from Bill Silvers, 2007. This hosta forms a medium sized mound with leaves that are blue-green with creamy yellow streaks. Pale lavender flowers in early summer. Hosta Inspire Greatness was named to honor the special olympics.

A sport of Gold Standard from R. Keller, 1992. Leaves green-margined with chartreuse center early, changing to a very light yellow center by late May then darkening in late summer.The leaves are 8"long by 5 7/8"wide. Pale lavender flower from mid July into early August.

Sport of Rhythm and Blues from Steve Watson of Brentwood, Tennessee, 2013. I absolutely love the tight low clump of my fast growing Rhythm and Blues so a variegated version of it should be just spectacular. Brentwood Blues has bright white margins on wavy narrow blue-green leaves. Lavender flowers in July into August.

This hosta I fell in love with from the first time I seen it. Sport of Niagara Falls from Jan van den Top. Forms an attractively rounded mound of cascading, green leaves with pale yellow to creamy white margins. Heart shaped leaves are edged in pie crust waves and have deeply impressed veins. Light lavender flowers. Shows mature traits best in older plants.

Hybrid of King Tut x "Mildred Seaver"seedling, from Olga Petryszyn, 1998. Spectacular. Leaves 12"x 10", thick, golden yellow with very wide and irregular medium green margins with chartreuse streaks jetting toward the midrib, matt above and glaucous below, seersuckered. Leaf lightly cupped, nearly round. Color brightens as the summer progresses. White flowers on 3 foot scapes in late June.

Sport of H. Baby Bunting. Reverse of Pandora's Box. Registered in 2002 by H. Hansen of Shady Oaks Nursery. Small round green leaves with creamy white margins. Medium green gray areas appear where edge and centre overlap.  Bright purple flowers in late June. Really cute. Great for fairy garden pots or in the rock garden.

Sport of H. Gold Standard from K. Brill, 1999. H. Captain Kirk has wider green margins and thicker substanced leaves than H. Gold Standard. The leaves emerge in spring with light green centres that become gold in the summer creating a nice contrast with the wide green edges. Nice corrugation in mature leaves. Excellent sun tolerance, although the centres will become more cream with lots of sun. 

Sport of Captain Kirk from G. Heemskert, 2009. This hosta is extremely unique with its tricolor changes throughout the season. It starts out a greenish yellow then the margin gradually turns white with a flash of darker green separating the greenish-yellow centre and white margin. Almost remeniscent of the flashing in Striptease. Lavender flowers on 16" scapes in mid-summer. 

A seedling from Mark Zilis, registered by Don Musak. As a young plant the leaves are wavy and narrow, as a mature plant the leaves widen out. Leaves are heavily streaked white and green. Small sized mound. Medium purple flowers late July into August. Medium growth rate. If you are looking to try growing seedlings of your own, this plant has lots of viable seed and many seedlings are streaky. Carolina Keepsake is a hybrid of Corkscrew x June from Bob Solberg of Green Hill Farm, Franklinton, North Carolina. Leaves are bright yellow, 3.5 inches wide by 7 inches long, very shiny, moderately twisted and folded and lightly wavy overall. Flowers are lavender and appear in August. This hosta was the 2015 American Hosta Society convention plant in Raleigh, North Carolina. 

Tetraploid sport of H. Stained Glass from H. Hansen, 2005. A dome shaped mound. Leaves ovate, good substanced, chartreuse turning golden yellow, very widely and irregularly margined spinach green, with chartreuse feathering and streaking, shiny above and glaucous below, dimpled, veins widely spaced, rapid growth. Fragrant near white flowers in August. Needs lots of sun.

Sport of Doug Beilstein's H. Breeder's Choice seedling. Heavily streaked green and white foliage forms a dense 10" high mound. Leaf blade ovate shaped and slightly wavy, average substance, fast growth rate. Pale lavender flowers. Great breeding plant for variegated seedlings. As with many streaky hostas, make sure you remove the solid green shoots and the stable shoots that have green leaves with a yellow margin as they will take over your plant. 

Seedling of H. Breeder's Choice from Mark Zilis, 2009.  Leaves have medium green centres with yellow edges that turn cream to white in summer. Fast growing, make nice small clumps for a border.  Pale lavender flowers on 24 inch scapes in July.  

A cross between Maya Kingsnake and Funny Cide, introduced by Altara Scheer, Vase shaped plant with bright green leaves showing off the dark red petioles. Lavender flowers on dark red scapes in August, fertile both ways, would be great for hybridizing.

Sport of lancifolia. One of the earliest hostas to come up in spring. Bright gold with a thin green margin, beautiful with yellow or blue spring bulbs. Changes to all green by July. A dense arching mound with lance shaped leaves, glossy above, satiny below, smooth, prominently veined. Light purple bell shaped flowers in late August. Also great in pots, fast growing.

Hosta of unknown parentage from T. Sears and T. Avent, 1999. One of the best gold leaved pie crust type ever developed. Leaf 16"long by 11"wide, bright gold, heavily rippled, broadly ovate shaped with a deeply lobed base, curled tip, with approx. 17 marginal ripples per leaf half, thin underside bloom. Pale lavender flowers in July, forms many seed pods.

2013 introduction from D. Beilstein. Medium to small sized hosta with a contorted appearance, cupped, corrugated leaves come out of the clump every which way, with a lime green to golden appearance deepening on amount of sun exposure. Leaves 6 "long x 6 " wide, 11 vein pairs, pale yellow, flat, start out with a glaucous nature turning shiny by midsummer, moderately cupped, moderately corrugated, nearly round, cordate base. Flowers on 24 inch scapes in June-July. Give this one lots of sun.

Hybrid of Frances Williams x Beatrice from Mildred Seaver and Kevin Vaughn, 1982. Large unruly mound of thick, heavily crinkled 8"x 6" rounded leaves, deep green with a slight blue cast, narrowly and irregularly margined cream with some transitional celedon streaks jetting toward the midrib, matt above and glaucous below, edge slightly rippled. Fast growing. In full bloom the hosta outline is pyramidal, hence, christmas tree look.

Sport of Blue Mouse Ears, distinguished by its coarsely wavy leaves. Forms a cute miniature clump of blue-green to green thick leaves and matures into a small, compact mound. Perfectly proportioned scapes carry lavender flowers in early summer.

Native to Korea. Rhizomatous mound of dark green foliage topped by closed purple flowers in August. Leaves 7 1/2" x 3 ", shiny on top and underside, narrowly ovate to elliptical, smooth textured, average substance, covered with red-purple dots on the petiole. The rich purple and pink flowers resemble tiny balloons that stand out in a garden against the green. Very showy flowers when in mass. Because of its rhizomatous nature, give this plant its own area as it will quickly fill it. Although each plant is small, it will spread and take over an area. Give it lots of water and sun to encourage lots of beautiful blooms. This one takes the ordinary out of a plain green hosta.

A Van Wade introduction of Puckered Giant X Woodland Blue. Ranks as one of the best for intense corrugation (at maturity) and dark green foliage color. Great slug resistance. Foliage starts as blue-green and become dark green later in the season. Leaves 14"long by 11"wide, broadly ovate in shape, cupped downward, somewhat unruly, thick substanced and covered with a thin underside bloom. Very pale lavender flowers on 32"scapes from late June into July, producing many seed pods. Medium to slow growth rate.

Tetraploid sport of H. Sagae from J. Clifford. 2000. Wide margined version of Sagae. Vase shaped mound of widely oval thick slightly wavy blue-green leaves with 3" widely and irregularly margined bright yellow turning creamy white with celadon streaks jetting toward the midrib, matt above and glaucous below, smooth. Profuse lavender flowers in July

Hybrid of hosta Manhattan x hosta Golden Gate.   This giant solid gold hosta from Olga Petryszyn makes a striking specimen. Emerges chartreuse yellow then turns lighter gold in summer. Thick puckered wavy leaves form an upright vase shaped clump. Pale violet flowers appear just above the foliage on proportionate scapes of 36 inches high in mid summer.

(Solberg 2007) (['Blue Cadet' X 'One Man's Treasure'] X o.p.) Mini, (5" X 12") This fast growing mini with heart-shaped leaves is bright waxy yellow in the spring with purple petioles. It has good substance and makes a very sturdy plant. A highlight of the spring season.

Hybrid of Tortifrons x One Man's Treasure from B. Solberg, 2003. A strikingly asymmetrical upright to arching mound. 7"x 2" shiny dark green twisted and curved leaves with thick substance, elongated tips, whitish shiny underside, purplish red petioles. Lavender flowers in September, frequently on forked scapes.

Hybrid of Glory x King Tut from Doug Beilstein. Rich gold leaves 7"x 6", oblong-ovate in shape, heavily corrugated and rippled, convexly cupped, good substance. Pale purple flowers in late June.

Hybrid of Hosta Cinnamon Sticks x Tequila Sunrise from Kathy Sisson. Medium sized mound of bright green, shiny, wavy foliage, leaves 7 inches long x 4 inches wide with nice red petioles. Underside of leaves whitish and shiny. Nice dark purple flowers in mid-September after most hostas have long since finished flowering.

Selfed seedling of Neat Splash from H. and D. Benedict. Dense mound of heavily rippled, white margined foliage, leaves 6 inches long by 2 1/2 inches wide with an 1/8th inch wide margin that changes from yellow to creamy white. Leaf centre gold early, medium green by mid-summer. Mediuim purple flowers in August, many reddish pods form. As a juvenile plant, Crested Surf offers a dense mound of multi-coloured foliage with neatly rippled petioles. At maturity, the leaves broaden and the rippling is less prominent.

Hybrid of Cinnamon Sticks x Cracker Crumbs by Bob Solberg. Neat, small, dense mound of wavy gold foliage. Leaves 3"long x 3"wide, gold color, especially bright in the spring, chartreuse by late summer, roundish blade shaped, wavy margins. Medium to fast growth rate. Lavender flowers on 18"scapes in July.

Pineapple Upsidedown Cake seedling from B. Solberg, 2009. The agave looking, highly ruffled, narrow leaves are very stiff; emerge chartreuse and fade to a near white. Sun tolerant; easily grows in half day sun. It makes a great container plant, or grows very well in the garden. You just have to touch this spidery looking plant. The flower scape is deep purple, topped with lavender flowers. Leaves are very narrow and ruffled when the plant is young. As the plant matures the leaves widen out more as seen in the middle photo.

Hybrid of Dorothy Benedict x Swoosh by Doug Beilstein. Semi-upright mound. Leaves almost round, 10"x 8", blue-green with gold margin, changing to dark green with a creamy white margin. Good substance, medium fast growth rate. Lavender flowers in July.

Sport of Summer Music and a reverse of Last Dance. Foliage is gold centred with a wide light green margin,. Leaf blade is broadly ovate-shaped, wavy and slightly corrugated. Pale lavender flowers in July. Differs from mother plant by its leaf centre which stays gold throughout the season.

Seedling of Split Personality from Kent Terpening. An open mound of pie crust edged brilliant golden yellow foliage that changes to chartreuse at the end of the summer. Satiny above and matt below, dimpled when mature, broadly ovate. Pale lavender flowers in July. Absolutely stunning plant. 

{[( H. Medusa x H. venusta ) x (H. Neptune x H. Fulda)] x [( H. Neptune x H. Fulda ) x H. Joy Ride )]} from H. Hansen / Walters Gardens 2018.  Heart shaped leaves have margins that are heavily ripped and give the hosta an overall wavy appearance. This variety holds its beautiful blue color throughout the season.  Near white flowers in late summer on 25-33 inch scapes.  

Hybrid of Green Piecrust x Just So from Doug Beilstein that combines the best traits of its parents. Leaves are 10 inches long by 8 inches wide, medium gold color, moderately corrugated, broadly ovate shaped with good substance. Medium growth rate. Pale lavender flowers in July.

Hybrid of H. Blue Moon from C. Seaver, 1994. A stiff open mound. Leaves are 8"x 7", very thick, rich dark blue, intensely seersuckered and puckered, cupped, nearly round with a thick underside bloom, become shiny green in late summer. Has an almost plastic like appearance. Rich lavender flowers in late July that don't always open. Very slow growing but well worth the wait. We always have comments about this hosta in our garden.

This sport of Blue Angel from Walters Gardens Inc. and A. Bergeron, 2009 , forms a giant upright mound of blue-green leaves with green margins. Becomes showier as the season progresses and margins brighten to light apple green. Large leaves of heavy substance. Near white flowers up to 48" high in mid season.

[ H. Niagara Falls hybrid  x ( H. Neptune x H. Fulda)]   Attractive, heart-shaped, thick and heavily corrugated blue leaves have wavy margins. The large size of this plant also translates to large leaves: they can get up to 9 inches wide by 11 inches long. Pale lavender flowers appear in early to midsummer.

Sport of Hosta Radiant Edger from Gerardus Heemskerk of the Netherlands, 2011. This hosta makes a small mound with leave coloration opposite to that of its parent. The thick heart shaped leaves are a muted gold, edged with a wide dark green border. Pale lavender flowers in early summer.

Seedling from W. Zumbar, K. Walek, 2009, parentage unknown. Small dense mound of narrow, heavily rippled gold foliage. Leaves 3 1/2"long x 1 1/2"wide, whitish shiny leaf underside. Medium purple flowers on 17"scapes in late July. Great as an edging plant, in rock gardens, in troughs or shallow containers. Will take lots of morning sun provided it has lots of moisture.

Sport of Great Expectations from B. Ruetenik and K. Walek, 1996. Nearly round leaves, 9"x 8", have chartreuse turning creamy white centres with very wide blue-green margins with streaks jetting toward the midrib, matt above, glaucous below, seersuckered, edge slightly rippled, slightly cupped or convexed. Much better grower than its mother plant.

This cross is from a streaked sport of Niagara Falls and Empress Wu from Hans Hansen of Walters Gardens Inc. in 2019.   A beautifully variegated large magestic hosta. Large ovate leaves have green centres and brightly contrasting yellow margins. The margins are heavily rippled and give the leaves a lightly wavy overall effect.  White flowers appear above the foliage in midsummer.  A showy specimen for the shade.  

Echo the Sun is a bright yellow hosta with nicely rippled margins; comparable to a gold version of the blue 'Diamond Lake', but shares a similar wedge-shaped leaf of thick substance.  Compared to 'Coast to Coast',  'Echo the Sun' has a smaller habit and a pronounced rippled leaf margin.  Lavender flowers appear in midsummer.  

Halcyon hybrid from P. Th. Warmerdam, 2003. Leaf blade 6"x 4" , intense blue -grey , irregularly margined white with celadon streaking, smooth texture, thick substance, matt above, glaucous below. Lavender flowers in August. Not a fast grower but very striking hosta in the shade garden and well worth the wait to see it grow.

nigrescens background. HUGE, HUGE, HUGE arching and vase shaped mound of shiny, light green foliage towering over other hostas. Leaf size 14"long x 10"wide, leaf blade ovate-shaped with a very deeply lobed base and long, distinct tip. Leaves also very shiny on the underside and generally smooth-textured but with the occasionl streak of corrugation at maturity, thick substanced. Near white flowers on towering 71"scapes in mid-July. Hybrid of (H. Swoosh x longissima ) x Red Neck Heaven x Elvis Lives. Very distinctive hosta from Tony Avent, with an upright mounded habit. Tightly rippled, twisted, long and narrow leaves are green and yellow to creamy yellow margins. Mature plants have red speckled petioles. Lavender flowers in mid summer. Sharp looking in containers.

Lots of people still ask for the elephant leafed hosta, usually referring to sieboldiana Elegans. This hosta forms a very large mound of blue-green leaves that are 13 inches x 10 inches in size, heart shaped, thick textured, and heavily corrugated. Flowers are almost white, funnel shaped on 36 inch scapes in early summer. Elegans is a form of H. sieboldiana which is native to Japan.

A tissue cultured sport of Stained Glass from M. Zilis, 2010, with a distinct appearance. It differs from its mother plant by having a much wider margin and a heavier substance. Leaves are 9" long by 7" wide with a gold center and a 2" wide, bright green wavy margin. Emerald Charger has a medium to fast growth rate. Fragrant, pale lavender flower that open in August on 2 - 3' scapes.

Mutation of a Tardiflora seedling from Kuk's Forest Nursery, 1994. Foliage has a smooth whitish centre in spring, turning to light green by midsummer, then dark green by late summer. Leaf margin dark green, 1 1/2"wide and puckered, leaves 5 1/2"long x 4"wide, shiny on the underside and ovate shaped. Purple flowers on 30" scapes in late July. The contrast in texture between the dark green puckered margin and the white to light green smooth centre gives the plant an emerald necklace look.

Sport of H. Sea Angel Wings from J. Anderson, 2003. Leaves are arrow shaped with lots of ruffles and ripples on the edges, green edges with chartreuse turning to gold centres in summer, then cream centres late in the season. Pale lavender flowers in July. Place this hosta in full sun in the morning to bring out the gold color and better denser growth. 

Big John seedling from B. and V. Scaggs, 2008. Massive semi-upright mound of medium green foliage (bluish early). Originators specimen measured 39"high by 66"wide. Leaf blade broadly ovate, very wavy, slighly corrugated and thick substanced, moderate bloom on leaf underside. Largest leaves of any hosta so far, some leaves recorded as large as 25 inches long.

There are hostas, and then there's 'Etched Glass'-bringing style and refinement to your hosta garden. This sport of 'Stained Glass' has wider margins and thicker leaves than the parent. Very wide, dark green margins contrast with a bright, brilliant yellow centre. Between the margin and the centers is a light green pattern. Margins have puckering when the plant is mature. Very large and fragrant, near-white flowers appear in late summer

(Hideko Tajima x Purple Verticulated Elf ) from Don Dean, 2013. Beautiful upright hosta with pointed blue leaves with rich purple petioles. The leaves are 9 inches long by 5 inches wide with 10-11 pairs of veins, intensely blue-green, slightly rippled, heavy glaucous bloom on top and on the underside, lightly twisted. The purple flowers are spectacular: 1 3/4 inches long, speckled pale purple with lavender edges, tubular, with a 360 degree whirled flower placement, flowering in August.

Gorgeous hosta, on the small size of medium with parentage including Sweet Susan, Blue Blush and Hosta longipes from Hans Hansen. Wedge shaped leaves have centres that are creamy coloured, edged in a nice powder blue. 16 inch flower scapes in mid-summer.

A stunning plant that will catch your eye a long ways across the gardens in spring time. Sport of Sea Fire from Walters Gardens Inc. and A. Bergeron, 2005. An arching, overlapping mound. Leaf blade 7"x 4", good substance, satiny, bright yellow, narrowly and irrregularly margined and streaked medium green, moderately seersuckered, ovate. The yellow centre turns to a light green in mid-summer. Chartreuse petiole dotted with red, outlined in green. Red flower buds, shoots and petioles, lavender flowers in August.

Sagae seedling from D. and J. Ward, 1996. Wide mound of heavily corrugated medium gold foliage. Leaves 12"x 9", very broadly ovate, thick substance, slightly wavy margin. Medium lavender flowers in late July. Acts like a brighter smaller version of Sum & Substance.

Sport of Paul's Glory from M. Zilis with changing variegation and a distinctive watermark that develops mid-season. Leaves 7"long by 5"wide, changing from greenish in the centre with a gold edge to gold in the centre with a light green margin, and a dark green line (watermark) between the margin and the centre. Pale lavender flowers from mid-July into early August on 36"scapes. Good substance, medium to fast growth rate. Like Paul's Glory, I found that this one needs quite a bit of sun to bring out the color; I had mine in the shade the first few years and it stayed mostly green.

Tissue culture sport of Hosta Patriot developed at Shady Oaks Nursery in the mid 1990's. Registered by H. Hansen/Shady Oaks Nursery in 1999. Heart -shaped leaves have wide, pure white centres and dark green margns. Leaves 6 inches long by 4 inches wide. Lavender flowers in late July on 30 inch scapes. The top 6 inches of the scapes are pinkish-purple and the lower part of the scapes are creamy white. This is a very striking hosta to grow if you can maintain a good amount of moisture for it from spring to fall, and don't crowd it out with other hostas.

[ H. longipes hypoglauca x H. Crested Surf ]  Brilliant gold turning light green by late summer. Leaf blade ovate, 6"x 4", of moderate substance, slightly wavy, slightly corrugated, shiny above and matt below. Deep maroon red petioles, reddish flower scapes, lavender flowers in August. Beautiful in a pot in spring.

First Blush is the first hosta with this much red in the leaf to date. Hybridizer Bob Solberg worked on this cross for many many years and when news broke of its introduction, his facebook page for Green Hill Farm had 4200 hits within the first 5 days. Parentage of this hosta comtains many crosses with one of its last ones being Beet Salad as its parent. This write up of Bobs describes it perfectly : 'First Blush' not only has green leaves with red petioles that extend into the leaf blade but also a thin red margin around the leaf, similar but much more dramatic than its parent 'Beet Salad'. However, the most exciting thing about 'First Blush' is that in spring the leaf between the veins will start to "blush" red from the tip of the leaf down toward the base. " We have found in our gardens here in Ontario, the red blushing continues well into September, and is more intense if the plant is given more sun. Plants grown in mostly shade do not have much red blushing, so keep this one in full morning sun or more.

This sport of Hosta Dancing Queen has a wide yellow centre and green margins.  Rippled green margins, varying from 1/4 to 1/2 inch wide, jet into the leaf centre, giving the plant a graceful appearance.  This hosta forms an upright mound-shaped clump. The intense yellow centres mellow to chartreuse by mid-summer.  Pale lavender flowers appear above the foliage mid to late summer on arching scapes. A great specimen plant that will brighten up a shady part of your garden. Also does great in a pot as seen in our photo. 

Tissue culture sport of Halcyon from 2002. Leaves 6 inches long x 4 inches wide, leaf color blue-green in the centre with a bright yellow margin in spring, changing to dark green with a creamy white margin. Margin 1/4 " to 1/2 " wide, leaf blade ovate-shaped and thick substanced.  Very pale lavender flowers from late July into mid-August on 24-30 inch scapes.   

Small sport of Deja Blue from Walters Gardens, 2013, with more pronounced variegation. Blue-green to medium green leaves display chartreuse margins which lighten through the season. Develops a characteristic white lightning bolt between the centre and the margin. Light lavender flowers in early summer.

Independence Day seedling. Very thick almost rubbery long chartreuse leaves have a dark green palm leaf pattern in the centre which extends down the petiole. Immature leaves on young plants appear almost crumpled. This hosta has an unmistakable presence in the garden. Vigorous growth rate. Pale lavender flowers in July.

Edged sport of Blue Ribbons from S. Beikmann, 2007. Leaves 7 inches long by 5 inches wide, intensely blue-green with a creamy white edge jetting toward the mid-rib, 8-10 vein pairs, glaucous bloom on top and below, lightly rippled, slightly cupped, moderately flat, lightly ovate. Blue color holds well late into the season then becomes more grey-green. Petiole is blue-green with a thin white edge. Flower scape 18-20 inches high, slightly fragrant pale lavender flowers in mid-July to mid-August.

Tissue culture sport of Royal Mouse Ears from M. Zilis and E. and J. Deckert, 2006. Dense mound. Leaves almost round, 2"x 2" blue-green to dark green centre with a wide yellow margin, turning to creamy white later in the season, thick substance, slow growth rate. Pale purple flowers in dense clusters in July.

Interesting small new green hosta with cupped and puckered very round leaves that make a flat, tight clump. Would look great combined with small blue or variegated hostas. This hybrid of (a seedling of H. 'Minuta' × H. 'Shining Tot') x an unnamed seedling of (H. 'Lakeside Looking Glass' × an open-pollinated seedling) was registered by Doug and Mardy Beilstein of Ohio in 2013.

[(H. Minuta F1 seedling B x H. Shining Tot ) x (H. Lakeside Looking Glass open pollinated seedling)]    Not quite a mini, this very small hosta has very bright wide white margins on cute little round leaves that are cupped and puckered. It has good substance and makes a tight, neat clump. It will brighten up any mixed container or trought.

Found near Mt Fuji, Japan. Bright green foliage, leaves 9"x 6", ovate shaped with a long thin tip, wavy margin, smooth, deeply veined, good substance. Light purple DOUBLE hose in hose type flowers in late July. Very tall flower scapes with lots of flowers per scape. Flowers often used by florists.

An Alteera Scheer introduction. The foliage starts out green to chartreuse in the spring (depending on the amount of sunlight) with deep red, almost black petioles with the color extending up into the leaf undersides. As the season progresses, some leaves turn all gold and some are gold with irregular green leaf margins; VERY unique! Foliage is also very shiny and of good substance; deep purple flowers produce fertile seeds.

A really pretty blue color on this small plant. A Tony Avent hybrid of hosta venusta x Dorset Blue. A small mound of thick blue-green leaves 4" long x 3 1/2" wide that are oval in shape, smooth in texture and have good substance. Pale purple flowers open on 19-22" scapes from late July into early August. Gemstone has a medium growth rate and is an outstanding blue-leaved edging plant.

Sport of Valentine Lace from C. Isaacs, 1991. Leaf blade 6"x 4", thick, creamy white in spring with streaking and misting soon appearing, widely margined blue-gray, dimpled, edge rippled and twisted, leaf folded, oval. Petiole green streaked and flecked white. Pale lavender flowers in late June.

Golden Falls is a Hosta Niagara Falls seedling from Doug Ruff and Bob Solberg, 2018.  This large, bright yellow hosta is very elegant with its upright  cascading, long pointed leaves, deeply impressed veins and heavy ripples along the leaf edges. The large, pale lavender flowers appear in mid-summer.

Sport of Elegans. Medium sized mound of foliage that is blue-green margined with a centre that changes from cream to green in summer. Leaf blade 9"x 8", ovate shaped, very wavy and corrugated in the margin and thick substanced, giving it a very interesting frilly edged effect. Near white flowers in late June

Very attractive medium sized mound of thick foliage with rich blue-green margins and sharply contrasting creamy centres. Pale lavender flowers in late July into August. Very similar to Hosta Touch of Class.

This is a cream-margined sport of Hosta Humpback Whale from Andrew Torvinen, 2018.  The leaves are blue-green to mostly green with a cream colored margin that colors in as summer progresses. Great White Whale forms a large classic mound of rounded corrugated leaves, topped with near white flowers in June to early July. 

Sport of Blue Mouse Ears, in 2004 from E. Deckert.  This small hosta makes a dense mound of round, medium green leaves, nearly round, roughly 1 1/2 inches wide by 2 inches long. Mound may reach 5 inches high x 9 inches wide. Pale purple bell shaped flowers are produced in dense clusters in July.

Very unique sport of Hosta Blue Angel from Bob Solberg, 2000. Leaves emerge a whitish yellow color in early spring, slowly turning more of a pale yellow-green then to a darker blue-green late in summer. Leaves are thick, spear shaped, pointed, 8 inches wide by 12 inches long. Clump is slow growing. Near white flowers in early summer.

Sport of Fragrant Bouquet. Hosta of the year for 2002. Large overlapping mound. Leaves 11"x 8", medium green irregular margin with centre chartreuse early becoming brighter if grown with some direct sunlight, glossy, leaf slightly convex, widely oval, prominently veined. Fragrant pale lavender flowers in mid August, fast growth rate.

Sport of Blue Angel from C. and R. Thompson, 1995.  Leaf blade 16"x 10", widely oval, leaf centre misted white and green surrounded by a wide and irregular blue-green margin, turning mostly green by mid-summer. Thick substance, slightly wavy, edge slightly folded, slightly corrugated, matt above, glaucous below, prominently veined. Near white flowers on tall scapes in late June.

Halcyon is still one of the best blue medium sized hostas on the market even though it has been around for many years as a hybrid from Eric Smith. It belongs to the tardiana group which is a group of hybrids resulting from the cross between H. tardiflora and H. sieboldiana var. elegans. The blue leaves are spear shaped and smooth textured. The growth rate is rather slow but worth the wait. Flowers are bell shaped, pale lavender on 26 inch scapes. Many sports have resulted from this hosta.

Sport of Striptease. A striking variegated mound. Leaf blade 7"x 3" , of average substance, matt, dark olive green widely and irregularly margined pale chartreuse green with a randomly marked silver-white halo separating the margin from the centre, the base color gradually turning creamy yellow and the margin turning ivory with a pale green overlay, seersuckered, ovate. As a young plant the leaves tend to stay long, narrow and twisted. As the plant matures, the leaves widen out making the whole plant appear completely different from the juvenile stage.

Sport of Hosta Andrew from Walters Gardens Inc. Similar to its sibling but with much more vigor thanks to the green streaks that appear in late summer. Like Andrew, Hans has corrugated, puckered and folded leaves with ruffling at the base. Glaucous blue-green rounded leaves have a showy wide feathery white centre with green jetting between the centre and margin. Pale lavender flowers in early to mid-summer.

Sport of Orange Marmalade from Naylor Creek, with wider, more blue-green margins. Leaves of good substance have yellow centres which brighten to parchment in summer. Livens up the shade garden with its distinct variegation and light lavender flowers in mid summer. This is one hosta that doesn't attract much attention as a juvenile plant in a pot, but we are really liking it as it matures in the garden- the margins are widening out and the colors are becoming spectacular.

This is a sport of Hosta Pineapple Upsidedown Cake from Mark Zilis and A.Vanous, 2011.  It may possibly be a tetraploid with thicker leaves and better color contrast.  The long strappy leaves are wavy and yellow with a blue-green margin that becomes green in the summer. Lavender flowers in late summer.  

An improved sport of Bright Lights from Jan van den Top. Chartreuse leaves with wide, blue margins in spring. Centre brightens to gold and margins deep to blue- green in summer. Thick puckered texture. Near white flowers in early summer.

Sport of Hidden Cove, 2006. Small mound of curly, white centred, dark green margined foliage. Pale purple flowers in July. 

This huge beautiful hosta comes from Jim Wilkins. As its name suggests, it easily commands your attention. Make lots of room for this one. In my garden, it's 3 1/2 feet high by 7 feet across. The leaves are 14"long by 11"wide, green centred with a 1"wide margin that changes from greenish yellow to creamy yellow throughout the season. Leaf blade is ovate, slightly corrugated and thick substanced. Whitish flowers bloom on 48"scapes in July.

Hosta Hogwarts comes from [H. Clearfork River Valley x (Brutus x h. montana f. macrophylla)] , D. and M. Beilstein, 2022.  The extremely thick dark green leaves are so heavily corrugated that they look like they are covered in warts.  Light lavender flowers appear above the leaves in summer.  Looking forward to seeing this hosta mature as we have always loved the heavy corrugation of its parent Clearfork River Valley.

H. Purple Haze x H. Riptide from Ronnie Van Keer of Belgium.  Holar Purple Flash has bluish green leaves in the spring with a nice blush of purple coming up through the veins and into the leaves.  As with all blue-green hostas that have a wax coating on the leaves, this wax wears off in the summer heat, leaving  shiny green leaves with a bit of purple still showing in the veins. Lavender flowers in August. 

Tetraploid sport of On Stage from Hans Hansen, 2006. Leaves yellow centred with a wide green margin, beautiful arching dome shaped leaves. In more shade the green is much darker with a chartreuse centre, in more light the centre brightens up. I like this hosta so much I have one in the garden in the shade and another one in a pot in a brighter location. Good growth rate. Pale lavender flowers in July.

Hybrid of September Sun x H. plantaginea from Bob Solberg, 2012. Nice tall plant, semi- upright and fast growing with the best characteristics of both parents.The leaves are honey coloured and pucker with age, fragrant flowers come in late summer. Leaves are golden yellow, 10 inches long by 8 inches wide, 10-11 vein pairs, slightly rippled, slightly shiny on top, slightly glaucous bloom underneath, slightly wavy and moderately corrugated. Flowers are white, tubular, flowering in mid-July to mid-August. Likes extra sun.

[(streaked sport of H. rupifraga x H. Niagara Falls) x (H. Neptune x H. Fulda ) ] from H. Hansen / Walters Gardens 2019. Heart shaped blue horizontal leaves have a crisp creamy white margin. Blue centre changes to green later in the season. Incredible ruffling on the leaves undulates all the way to the painted tips.  Near white flowers on 24-32 inch scapes in mid summer. 

Introduced by Walters Gardens Inc. in 2011 as an improvement over its parent Eskimo Pie. This new sport is a much showier, larger specimen and a stronger grower overall. The wider brighter blue margin and and apple green jetting contrast nicely with the creamy white centre all season long. The leaves are of heavy substance, exhibiting good slug resistance. Near white flowers on white scapes in early summer.

Until a few years ago, this giant hosta from the late Mildred Seaver had not been commercially available. During the 2006 American Hosta Society auction, a single plant of Humpbacked Whale sold for $ 3700. This hosta forms a huge mound of blue-green foliage which turns all green later in the season. Leaves are 17"long x 13"wide, moderately wavy with a "hump"in mid-leaf, broadly ovate shaped, corrugated, and thick substanced. Near white bell shaped flowers are produced on 37"scapes in early summer. The lovely flamboyant lady in the picture on the right is the late Mildred Seaver, a very well know hybridizer from the late 1970's onward.

Sport of Parhelion from Cindy Tomashek, 2014. Leaves are a rich green with a pure white margin. Leaves broadly ovate, 15 inches x 12 inches, slightly rippled, shiny, slightly cupped, slightly folded, slightly wavy. Fast growing. Differs from its parent with its much darker green centre and slightly shorter habit. Pale lavender bell shaped flowers on arching scapes in July, sets viable seed.

Seedling of Invincible from I. LaLonde and Naylor Creek, 2007. A very distinct hosta with an incredibly shiny lacquer like finish on both the top and the bottom of the leaves. Leaves are very dark green with a pie crust rippled margin, deep veining and good substance. Leaves are 13"long by 9 "wide, lightly wavy and ovate. Forms a vase shaped clump. Due to its plantaginea parentage, it exhibits some sun tolerance and produces 3 " fragrant, lavender flowers on 45" scapes in mid - August, sets viable seed. Beautiful plant to use as contrast to surrounding variegated or blue hostas to make both of them stand out.

Wide edged sport of Paradise Island from Walters Gardens Inc. Wide dark green margins stand out in sharp contrast to the bright yellow centres in early spring. As summer progresses the centres become more chartreuse when plants are grown in heavier shade or pale yellow if they are grown in more sun. Like Paradise Island this hosta also has showy red speckled petioles that bleed up into the leaves. Dark lavender flowers appear on reddish green scapes in mid-summer.

A superior sport of Sagae with broader rippled leaf margins. Spring leaves (11"x 9) are grey-green with yellow margins. Summer leaves have ivory margins and grey-green jetting towards the blue-green centre. Lavender flowers on 36"scapes in July. I have this hosta planted in front of a yellow magnolia. When the magnolia flower petals fall they are the same color as the hosta leaf borders- just stunning.

Tissue culture sport of Rich Uncle from M. Zilis, 2010. Forms a large mound of roundish gold centred foliage. Name means "rejoice" in the Zulu language. Leaf 9"long by 7"wide, gold centred with a 1/2 " wide green margin, corrugated, thick substanced. Near white flowers from late June into mid July on 30 " scapes. I didn't think much of this plant when it was small as it looked very plain but now that I am seeing it as a more mature plant, it is beautiful with its corrugated leaves and soft variegation. It now draws your attention when you walk by. Its parent Rich Uncle commands your attention when you walk by too. Both become much more golden throughout the summer and neither show any signs of burning in the sun.

H. montana macrophylla seedling. A very dramatic upright, arching mound. Leaf blade 18"x 10", elongated lanceolate to oval, medium to dark green, deeply lobed base with moderately wavy leaf margins, good substance, glossy, slightly dimpled, veins very distinct. Flowers pale lavender on 5 foot leaning scapes in July. Makes an impressive statement in a garden. We first seen this plant at the 2005 American Hosta Society Convention and fell in love with it. When we came home we searched till we found it. Place this plant in a sheltered area protected from late spring frosts as it is an early riser and can get hit with frost if it comes up too early.

This hosta is from the late Jane Diesen, 2020.  It is a medium sized blue hosta with gently waving heart shaped leaves that are pointed on the ends and have light corrugation.  The leaves also have some beautiful light purple coloration along the midribs in spring that catch your attention.

One of the best from Alttara Scheer of Connecticut. The leaves are 5"long by 2 1/2"wide and dark green with margins heavily rippled and serrated. It has medium to fast growth with lavender flowers.

Dark green shiny sport of its streaky parent Josephine from Bob Kuk, 1990. You will want to leave space in your garden for this one as it really pops out when planted beside a few variegated or blue hostas. All variegated hostas need a few solid colored ones planted beside them to make them stand out. Leaves 7 inches x 6 inches, ovate shaped, deeply lobed, with slight corrugation and good substance, shiny on the underside as well as on the top, maroon spots on the lower section of the petioles. Lavender flowers on 33 inch scapes in late July.

Tissue culture sport of Halcyon from Neo Plants out of England,1991. Leaf blade 6"x 4", oval, thick, centre chartreuse turning yellow then ivory if given more sun, irregularly margined blue with streaks jetting toward the midrib, smooth, slightly cupped, petiole chartreuse yellow. Pale lavender flowers in late July. Site in shade for more blue/chartreuse coloration. Still one of the most beautiful hostas of all time, always makes people stop and look when they see it in our garden. You can see in the photo that the leaves at the back of the plant in the shade are blue with a chartreuse centre but the leaves in the front of the plant that are getting more sun have a creamy white centre.

Wide margined sport of June Fever. Shiny leaves with wide deep green margins and centres that are a vivid yellow in spring, later turning chartreuse then light green by mid- summer. Lavender flowers appear on chartreuse scapes in mid to late summer. Gorgeous hosta.

sieboldii sport. Small arching sometimes rhizomatous mound of narrow, rippled, chartreuse to gold-centred, green margined foliage. Leaves 6 1/4"long x 2"wide with a 1/4"wide green margin. Leaf blade narrowly elliptic, moderately wavy, smooth textured and slightly shiny underneath. Petiole chartreuse outlined in green. Increases rapidly in a hot humid climate with lots of moisture. Pale purple flowers on 16"scapes in August. Equally wonderful as an edger or in pots where you can see it up close.

Sport of Squash Casserole from Hans Hanson. Leaves 10 inches long by 8 inches wide, heavily rippled with dark green centres and gold margins. Medium purple flowers produced in July on 36 inch scapes. Key Lime Pie is notable for its beautiful combination of rippled margins and striking variegation.

Hybrid of Hosta Elatior x High Noon from Olga Petryszyn 1999. Very large hosta with intense, gold heart shaped leaves. Bright filtered shade brings out the most intense gold coloration. Lavender flowers on 32 "scapes in early summer. This hosta is considered a premium hosta variety, a part of a group of the finest hostas available today. Members of this collection were selected by a group of specialty hosta growers in zone 4-7 who together have a combined total of 150 years of hosta growing experience. To be considered a premium hosta, plants must perform superbly in all 4 zones, (4-7). They must also exhibit exemplary garden presence and performance, have a long season of appeal in the landscape, have leaves of good substance, and demonstrate a greater resistance to common garden pests.

Sport of Striptease from Barry Sligh of New Zealand, 2000. Leaf blade 6"x 3", centre glaucous chartreuse turning creamy yellow to ivory, widely margined with a rich blue-green with occasional silver flecks at the junction between the centre and the margin, slightly dimpled, oval, good growth rate. Bluish bloom covers the whole leaf surface in spring giving it a very beautiful and unique appearance. Stands out. Pale lavender flowers in July.

Sagae seedling from Barry Sligh of New Zealand. A large upright mound of  blue-green foliage with leaves 12" long x 10" wide, thick substanced, with a thick underside bloom. Lavender flowers in July.

Seedling of Donahue Piecrust from M. Seaver/C. Seaver, 2004. Forms a giant upright mound of blue-green heavily rippled foliage. The thick, 15 inch x 11 inch leaves are deeply veined and pointed. Flowers are light lavender seen in mid-summer.

Hosta Korean Snow is a yingeri seedling discovered by Kim Hawks and Bob Solberg in 1999 at Niche Gardens in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.  It has green and white streaked, shiny, elliptical leaves with stable coloration.  The flower scapes are 22 inches high, flowers are purple and spider like, as in the yingeri species. Seed set is viable for anyone who might want to use Korean Snow for hybridization. This hosta is an early riser so place it carefully in your garden-perhaps somewhere where it stays shaded in the afternoon and where the surrounding ground does not thaw too early in the spring. You want to avoid an early spring frost.

Hybrid of H. Fascination x H. montana, 1994. Leaf blade 8"x 6", thick, soft golden chartreuse, widely and irregularly margined creamy white, satiny above, and glaucous below, dimpled, veins widely spaced, widely ovate, edge rippled. Leaf color starts out chartreuse in spring, turning gold in summer. Petiole chartreuse, outlined in cream. Pale lavender flowers in July. A very bright hosta, one of my favourites in mid-summer.

Hybrid of a seedling x Lakeside Ripples from Mary Chastain, 2001. Leaf blade 14"x 11", heavily rippled, shiny medium to dark green leaves, good substance, oblong-ovate shaped. Very pale lavender flowers in late July. Leave space for this plant. It is gorgeous as a mature plant, making a beautiful tall upright specimen. It may be all green but you will fall in love with it.

One of Mary Chastain's very best from 2006. Stunning small hosta features thick substanced, heart-shaped leaves with very wide, wavy, green margins. Narrow, creamy white markings in the centre shoot out from a feathery pattern from the cream petioles. Light lavender flowers on cream 22-24"scapes in mid-summer. I think this hosta will eventually be taller than originally thought. Mine in the shade is about 16-18 inches high.

This is an absolutely beautiful hosta from Mary Chastain, 2002. Parentage is unknown but once you see this hosta you will remember it. The thick substanced 6 inch x 9 inch dark green leaves are ovate to almost round shaped, VERY heavily corrugated, frilled and have a rippled edge. Pale lavender flowers on 25 inch scapes in July.

This hosta becomes a huge mound of heavily rippled dark green leaves, from Mary Chastain, 1991. Leaves 13"long x 9"wide, ovate shaped with a twisted tip, thin bloom on underside, good substance. Pale lavender flowers on tall scapes in July.

Another nice hosta from Mary Chastain, 1998. A large mound of gold-centered, blue-green-margined foliage with leaves 11 1/2"long by 9 1/8"wide. The 3-4"wide leaf margin turns a shiny dark green by midsummer. The leaves are ovate to broadly ovate, moderately corrugated at maturity, and thick-substanced. Pale lavender flowers open on 33"scapes from mid July into early August.

Leaf blade 13"x 11", very broadly ovate, dark green in the centre with a thin yellow irregular margin, moderately wavy, slightly corrugated, thick substance, satiny above and glaucous below, dimpled and puckered, prominently veined. Petiole pale green outlined in cream. Its beauty can only be appreciated at maturity. Lavender flowers open at the top of the scape in July.

An open pollinated seedling of ( Splashed Leather x Treasure Island ) from Doug Beilstein. This hosta has attractive bright green glossy leaves that are highly ruffled, folded and heavily puckered. Every leaf is different giving this hosta a wild and crazy look. Light purple flowers in late summer that are fertile. We originally brought this hosta in only for ourselves thinking no one would like such an unusual looking plant. Turned out many others liked it too.

Sport of Lemon Lime from R. Bowden and P. and J. Ruh, 2005. Green centred, chartreuse margined foliage, leaf blade 4"x 2", narrowly ovate, slightly rippled and thin substanced. Bright purple flowers in July. May rebloom in September. Needs full sun to bring out brighter variegation and more ripples. A very nice and dense small hosta that grows quickly. Great as an edger. Just like its parent, this little hosta looks way better in full sun. It causes it to stay shorter, brighter, denser and with lots more ripples in the leaves. If you situate this hosta in full sun give it alot of water to make sure the short roots don't dry out- maybe plant it near your watering hose.

Tissue culture sport of Lemon Lime from M. Zilis and R. Solberg, 2002. Leaves 3"x 1", chartreuse centred with a white margin, extremely vigorous. Purple flowers in July. Makes an ideal edging plant or low ground cover.

Tremendous Bob Solberg hybrid (H. clausa normalis F2 seedling x Strawberry Banana Smoothie) that beautifully combines gold foliage and red petioles in a small sized plant. Leaves 4" long x 3" wide, light lemony yellow, intensely red petioles. Purple flowers open on reddish scapes in July. Medium to fast growth rate. You need to let this hosta grow a few years in your garden before it actually starts to look nice. 

Open pollinated seedling of hosta Quill. Another great mini to small seedling from Doug and Marty Beilstein, 2016. This wavy, highly ruffled mini hosta grows rapidly into a nice bright yellow mound. Lavender flowers. I wasn't sure of this plant when it first arrived but once I seen it coming up the following spring I found that the color changes over the season from a lignt green to a mix of a vibrant yellow and chartreuse. Add in a shine to the leaves and you have a very unique beautifully colored small hosta.

hypoleuca seedling from Peter Ruh 1991. Sibling to Azure Snow and Thor. Bright yellow leaves with snow white backs. Leaves 16 inches x 12 inches, broadly ovate shaped, slightly corrugated and lightly rippled, good substance, good growth rate. Pale lavender flowers on 24 inch scapes in July.

According to Bob Solberg this is his next generation of yellow hostas with red petioles for 2018. The leaves are cupped upward to accentuate the red as it saturates the midrib sometimes to near the middle of the leaf. The cupping is a new leaf shape for this line of breeding with some puckers thrown in here or there. In mid-summer a very dark purple scape emerges with pretty purple striped flowers in a tight mass. A great breeder too.

'Lemon Zinger' is Bob Solberg's new green-margined sport of the increasingly popular 'Dragon Tails'. Its wavy bright yellow leaves are outlined in dark green. It is a vigorous little mini, perfect in a pot. It just might be your cup of tea.

This is another bright yellow hosta with red petioles from Bob Solberg, 2019. It may be small but you can certainly see the dark burgundy red color of the petioles extending well into the leaf. Leaves are slightly shiny, slightly cupped, and round like Bibb lettuce, making a tight round and flat clump.  The leaves turn a chartreuse to light green color later in the season. The flowers are purple on mahogany red petioles, showing off their beauty in mid to end of July.

New hosta from Dan Heims, 2023. The ruffled, olive green leaves are held on wine red petioles.  The wine color comes up into the veins of the leaves and blushes into the leaves themselves.  Some red blushing can be seen on the leaf edges. 

Sport of Sagae. HOSTA OF THE YEAR FOR 2012. Vase shaped habit. Leaf blade 12"x 9", centre blue-green turning green with a 2 inch wide golden yellow margin (turning ivory-cream later) jetting toward the midrib, matt to glaucous above and glaucous below, edge folded, widely oval, heavy substance, moderately rippled. An absolutely stunning plant, will stand out in any garden as a focal point. I have had this plant in my garden for many years now and I still think it is the most beautiful hosta that has come on the market.  Pale lavender flowers in July.

(( H. Swoosh x H. Raving Beauty ) x First Blush )). Doug Ruff, 2019. This small hosta explodes into spring with bright yellow narrow leaves blushed with red.  As with H. First Blush the red will fade with summers heat and the bright yellow darkens to a medium green by late summer.  Give it spring sun to bring out its red blush color. Pale purple flowers in August on red scapes. Sets viable seed so this one may be good for hybridizing.

Sport of Little Jay from J. van den Top and D. Van Eechaute, 2008. More vigorous than its parent. As a young small plant leaf blades are narrow and slightly twisted giving the mound a strappy twisted look. As the plant matures it changes considerably with the leaf blades widening out and the plant becoming a nice compact full mound. Color is a creamy white in the centre with a very wide medium blue-green margin. Fast growth rate. Lavender flowers on cream scapes in early to mid summer. Nice in a pot which tends to keep the leaves long and narrow, but also perfect in the garden as a front and centre specimen.

Hybrid of H. Pineapple Pole x H. rectifolia Äurea' from R. Franks and R. Solberg, 2007. Upright mound. Leaf blade 7"x 1", thick, narrow, spiky, heavily rippled medium green leaves that have good substance. Tough enough to flourish in the garden with the big boys or you could put it in a hanging pot instead of a fern for a conversation piece. Lavender flowers in late July.

Hosta Love Story is a hybrid of H. Niagara Falls Streaked x H. Viking Ship from Hans Hansen of Walters Gardens Inc, 2020. The long heart shaped leaves have medium green margins with chartreuse jetting that bleeds into creamy white centres.  The medio-variegation extends from leaf tip to the petiole, flaring at the base of the leaf. Tall 22-30 inch scapes hold large clusters of tubular white flowers in early summer, creating a hosta that can be enjoyed for its foliage and flowers.  

Medium. One of the best of Bob Solberg's red seedling crosses. Clausa normalis F2 seedling x Strawberry Banana Smoothie. Sibling to Smiley Face. Unusual wavy yellow leaves with red on both sides of the petiole and up into the leaf. Red scapes with lavender flowers. Great breeding plant, fertile both ways. Needs to mature to be appreciated. Very bright yellow early in the spring changing to chartreuse in the summer. It actually looks nicer in the summer rather than in the spring.

A sport of Dance With Me, this hosta has the reverse variegation of Stitch in Time.This hosta displays a unique puckering between the wide green margin and narrow, chartreuse to creamy yellow centre. In more sun the centre can take on a slight orange tone. The 7"x 8" rounded leaves are of good substance and have widely ruffled edges. Lavender flowers on 22" scapes in late summer. Needs to mature before the centre puckering becomes evident.

Streaked seedling of Yellow Splash. Leaf color a shiny dark green with yellow and cream streaks. Leaf size 9 inches by 5 inches, ovate shaped, smooth textured, and very shiny on the underside. Pale lavender flowers on tall 48 inch scapes in July. Very fertile, produces streaked seedlings, good breeder plant. May need to be split often to keep the stable shoots out of it.

Hybrid of H. Frances Williams x H. August Moon from W. Vaughn, 1991. Upward facing small mound. Leaf blade 5"x 4", thick, very bright gold, heavily corrugated and cupped leaves, thick substanced, shiny above and glaucous below, somewhat unruly. Bell shaped flower, green-tipped virtually white on a chartreuse scape in July. Very large leaf bracts on scapes, large greenish purple seed pods. Slow to establish but eventually has a moderate growth rate. Takes a lot of sun in our gardens and does well.

Hybrid of Neat Splash x gracillima. The long narrow twisted leaves are definitely true to its name. Leaves 5"long x 1"wide, centre yellowish early becoming ivory, margin splashed with emerald green and olive green, rippled and twisted. Petioles ivory, outlined in 2 shades of green. Deep lavender flowers open from green buds on an upright leafy charteuse scape. My experience with this one has been lots of sun with lots of water enhances the rippling and twisting of the leaves. Looks wicked in a shallow pot with other minis.

D. & M. Beilstein 2009) (Sport of streaked 'Blue Angel') Huge, (22" X 54" or larger) This one of Doug Beilstein's is a sport of the classic 'Blue Angel', named for his daughter. The huge blue leaves emerge with this wide, soft yellow border that will become white by late summer. It grows well and has the same wonderful near white flower display as its parent.

A 1986 cross between Sagae and Tokudama Aureonebulosa from a great hybridizer, Olga Petryszyn, Memphis Blue forms a beautiful large upright mound of heavily corrugated thick blue heart shaped leaves that hold their blue color well into the season. Produces white flowers.

A sport of Hosta Pathfinder from Naylor Creek from 2008, non-registered. Leaves are 5"long x 4 inches wide, thick, dark green edges, centre starts out white with green specks in the spring becoming mottled with more and more dark green as the season progresses. Lavender flowers in late July into August.

Sport of Blue Mouse Ears from Walters Gardens Inc. 2006. Leaf blade 3"x 3", flat, mouse ear shaped, emerges blue-green with a bright creamy-yellow edge. By summer, leaves turn grey-green with a creamy white edge. Incredible substance with a moderately fast growth rate. Lavender flowers are produced on perfectly proportioned scapes in July.

Sport of 'Mighty Mouse' from Walters Gardens Inc., 2013. Leaves are blue-green, circled by a wide, creamy-yellow edge that has big, loopy waves. The wavy edges give the thick leaves a twist, making for a dense clump that is a bit rowdy. A fun, flirty addition to the mouse family.

Hosta Miss Linda Smith is a seedling of unknown parentage from Arthur Wrede. 2006. Leaf blade 7"x 5", blue-grey to green, ovate shaped, moderate underside bloom, slightly rippled, better than average substance, deep purple petioles. Light purple flowers on deep purple scapes in late July. Arthur Wrede (originator) considers this his best introduction.

Sport of H montana found in Japan. Vase shaped mound. Leaf blade 15"x 8", oblong-eliptical to ovate shaped, green centred gold margined foliage, bright gold in spring, chartreuse in summer, leaf blade arching, slightly rippled, deeply impressed vein pairs, faintly corrugated, good substance. Pale lavender flowers on 48" scaped in July. One of the most beautiful hostas you'll recongize a long ways away.

Hybrid of Invincible x Northern Halo. Beautiful mound of bluish smooth foliage becoming shiny green with early flowering fragrant flowers to boot! Leaves 10"x 9", wavy, moderately rippled, slightly cupped, and thick substanced. Fragrant pale lavender flowers open from mid July into August on 36-40" scapes.

Sport of Solar Mouse from Bob Solberg, 2020.  Mouse Madness is a white edged sport of the almost impossible to grow yellow Solar Mouse that is seen in this photo along with Blue Mouse Ears.  Leaves are blue-green with bright white margins that turn more cream in the summer. Lavender flowers in late June.

Sport of Hosta Mouse Madness, from Mark Zilis and Bob Solberg, 2017.  The small wavy blue-green leaves are edged with a white margin. A vigorous growing hosta like Ruffled Mouse Ears.  Lavender bell- shaped flowers just above the leaves in mid-summer.

Mini. Really cute sport of Blue Mouse Ears from Shady Oaks Nursery. Emerges in spring with a pure white centre and a few green specks, surrounded by blue green edges. Edges may turn more green by mid summer. Excellent growth rate. Lavender flowers on white scapes in June.

This vigorous new yellow miniature hosta from G. Goodwin, introduced by Walters Gardens, is the perfect size for troughs and fairy gardens. Short and narrow leaves hold their bright yellow colour all season long. Since the leaves are so narrow there isn't a prominent leaf base, and the leaves simply taper to become part of the petiole. Lavender flowers appear above the petiole in mid-summer.

Hybrid of (H. Maekawa x Halcyon) x H. Salute from H. Hansen, 2006. This unique blue hosta forms a lovely cascading clump of narrow wedge-shaped 13"long x 7"wide leaves with heavily rippled edges and good leaf substance. They emerge bright glaucous blue in spring and hold their color well. Blue-green in summer. Pale lavender flowers in early August into early September on arching scapes, sets viable seed.

Hybrid of H. montana macrophylla x H. Sea Drift from W. Brinka and O. Petryszyn, 1991. Semi-upright mound of heavily rippled green foliage. Leaf blade, 14"x10", is broadly oblong-ovate. Leaves are deeply veined, thick substanced and leaf tips curl and twist. At maturity huge cascading leaves have moderate corrugation. Pale lavender flowers on 45" scapes in late July. Anyone after pie-crusted margins should put this hosta at the top of their list. The large mound size and vase-shaped habit accentuates this trait.

Very upright vase shaped mound of deeply cupped blue-green foliage in spring, dark green by mid-summer. Leaf blade 12"x 9" widely oval to nearly round, moderately corrugated, thick substance, with a thick bloom on leaf underside. Pale lavender flowers on towering 58" scapes in late July. Shoots emerge almost black in spring. This hosta is easily distinguished with its upright architectural structure.

Hybrid of H. Fascination x H. Black Beauty from Rick Goodenough in 2006.  Medium sized mound of puckered unruly green foliage. Lighter green when unfurling in spring but a nice dark green throughout the season.  Pinkish flowers in July on 13 inch scapes. 

Sport of H. Sparkling Burgundy from Tony Avent in 1998.  Leaves are 7 inches long x 5 wide, ovate with a rounded base, somewhat wavy, thick substanced. Leaves are dark green with a medium green streaky centre area. Pale purple flowers on 25 inch scapes in August. Parent of Hosta Rainbow's End which is a much more popular hosta.

Tissue cultured sport of Love Pat. Leaves white-misted in the centre with a blue-green margin. Margin is heavily rippled, giving a twisted look to the leaf. Registered by the Ontario Hosta Society.

Sport of Glory from H. Hansen, 1999. Pale green coloration in the spring that brightens up dramatically in the summer with sun. Leaf blade 9"x 7", green margined, gold centred, broadly ovate, heart shaped, moderately wavy, slightly corrugated, thin underside bloom. Vigorous growth rate. Purple flowers with unusual internal markings in late June. A stunning plant that stands out amongst other hostas.

Selected H montana from a Japanese collection. Leaf blade 10" x 6", gold centred, irregular 2 tone green margin with streaks jetting towards the midrib, becoming green by mid-summer. Deeply veined, very bright color. Lavender flowers in late July. One of the last hostas to come up in spring but one of the most beautiful.

Sport of Dancing Queen from Walters Gardens Inc. 2016. The leaves have dark green centres and very wide yellow margins. The dramatic margins have irregular patterns varying from 1/2 to 2 1/2 inches creating a very feathery look. The intense yellow margins mellow to charteuse by mid-summer. Pale lavender flowers appear above the foliage from mid to late summer

H. longipes hypoglauca seedling, registered in 1999 by H. Benedict and R. Solberg. This seedling was found by Bob Solberg in Herb Benedicts compost pile. This is another one of those hostas that you will recognize easily once you see it. Forms a medium sized mound of smooth, shiny green leaves with rich red petioles, the red extending up into the midrib of the blade. Leaves 6 inches x 4 inches, ovate shaped, slightly wavy, whitish shiny on the underside. Purple flowers open on 16 inch scapes very late from mid September to October. This hosta has been used widely for breeding more red into the petioles and leaves of hostas.

A pycnophylla seedling from Japan. Small sized mound of slightly wavy white margined, green centred smooth foliage with a white back on the leaf underside. Average growth rate. Pale lavender flowers in late summer. The name is derived from a small island in the inland Sea where H. pycnophylla is native.
