Large Size 3-4' Tall | Excelent upright, evergreen Juniper

Renowned for its silvery blue-green color, compact growing habit, and versatility, the Blue Point Juniper is a top choice for landscape design. It is a perfect choice for any application in the landscape. It grows in a tight pyramid shape with dense branching, reaching 8 to 12 feet tall and only 3 to 6 feet wide. This evergreen has a high visual impact with very little effort. It pairs well with anything, looks great anywhere, and is very low maintenance. Use it as the main structural element to tie the landscape together with a striking color that lasts all year.

Care

Choose a sunny location with well-drained soil for the Blue Point Juniper. Before planting, water the root ball. Dig a hole twice the width of the container and as deep as the container. Plant the tree at or just above the soil level for good drainage away from the trunk. Water to settle the soil. Add 2 inches of mulch around the tree's base, keeping it from touching the trunk directly. If mass planting, space the Blue Point Juniper 4 to 6 feet apart for a natural screen. Apply a slow-release fertilizer in early spring before new growth appears.

Blue Point Juniper can be planted any time of the year, but spring and fall are the best choice to avoid extreme temperatures while the plant is establishing. Water it deeply a couple of times per week for the first few months after planting as the juniper establishes its roots. After it is established, it should receive enough rainwater unless it is a dry spell.

After it establishes, it basically takes care of itself, making it perfect for any application. It has a nice form without pruning, but can be shaped as needed for a more formal appearance. Prune any time except the hottest or coldest months. Early spring just before new growth appears is a great time to trim. In colder climates, avoid trimming in late fall, as new growth would be unprotected from the cold and may burn. Use sharp tools to make clean cuts to avoid tearing or ragged cuts, which can lead to browning.

Uses in the Landscape

Blue Point Junipers are versatile, low maintenance trees that grow in zones 4 to 9. They are hardy down to -30 degrees and thrive in hotter climates as well. They grow at a moderate rate, adding 6 to 12 inches each year and taking about 10 years to reach maturity. They are pest, disease, and deer resistant and attract birds to their dense branches.

These lovely trees are great in any part of the landscape. They are wonderful as a focal tree or in the background to compliment other plants. They can tolerate pollution and salt and have a compact growing habit, so they can be planted near driveways and streets. Planted in mass, make a great wind break or natural screen. Their formal appearance and smaller size makes them great for a formal entry, lining the drive or framing a window or entry of a house or garage. They can also be shaped and make beautiful topiaries.

Companion Plants

The Blue Point's interesting texture and blue-green hue makes it easy to pair it with just about anything. Use it in the background to beds or make it a focal tree. Pair it with grasses and low shrubs and plants that also only need occasional watering for a very low maintenance bed in front of the house or anywhere in the landscape.

The Loropetalum, a shrub with warm tones of rich pink-purple foliage and dark pink flowers, looks amazing against Blue Point's cool tones, and it can be trimmed to stay small if desired. The vibrant greens and creamy tufts of the Dwarf Fountain Grass compliment the Blue Point Juniper, and this low-growing grass will not block a window or the view of the juniper if planted in front of it. Blue Glitter Sea Holly echoes and emphasizes the blue tones of the Blue Point juniper, and Butterfly Candy Buddleia adds a burst of fun color that compliments the dark tones of this evergreen tree.
