Local, native plants have so much to offer and are often overlooked when designing the home garden. No matter what space you have, you can fill it with a local, native plant. Native plants have a huge plus column when deciding which plants to chose for your paradise. You know they are tolerant of your climate, the strong winds, the sea spray, even the blistering sun. They attract local wildlife and provide the food and shelter they need. They come in all the colours of the rainbow and any shape or size.
Native plant lovers are a passionate bunch. They get excited about creating the Aussie bush in their own backyard and are more than happy to help others do the same. They are studying these plants in their natural habitat and adapting them to suit the urban garden. They understand the relationship within the whole system and that a garden is about more than just the plants in it.
In Australia, we have the highest rate of marsupial extinction in the world. The number one reason for this is habitat loss. In Australia, we have the highest rate of marsupial extinction in the world. The number one reason for this is habitat loss. Unfortunately, we want to live in the same places the wildlife do and therefore they lose their homes. This doesn't have to be the case. We can share our homes with the wildlife by creating habitats for them to pass through, stay for a day, or live forever. I call it Natura Domi which is Latin for Nature at Home. We can create natural stepping stones and corridors where animals can safely move about and have all that they need to thrive. It doesn't have to be an us or them situation, we can live together. Once you create it, you may be surprised by who shows up.
