Yukako x Ma’s Prince Froggie by Kathryn Lovett

Kathryn Lovett made a unique cross with Yukako x Ma’s Prince Froggie.

Here are the seedling, and what Kathryn says:

Call to Heart

Call to Heart.  This one is common-looking enough, but I include it to show some of the variety of this cross.  All the flowers here are from Yukako x Ma’s Prince Froggie.

You’ll notice the mosaic nutrient deficiency pattern on the older leaves of just about all my plants.  I believe that was caused by my having quite a cold house last winter.

False Fire False Fire -

False Fire.  One of my favorites.  The flowers are picking up the flash here—they really do have a matte finish, and their colors are not quite this intense, but they do remind one of little flames.  The flowers are about 1 1/4 inches across.

After the Rain

After the Rain.  This flower is very delicate looking, and better-looking in person.  But the flowers may be going to more blue, and less green in the throats—the flowers are too variable at present, so I’m less interested, though if I were staying here, I would certainly keep it for a while to see.  I wonder if flowers turning to plain forms is caused by stress—I have let the plants dry out a few times recently as I prepare for my trip…

Remember Why We Came

Remember Why We Came.  I can’t believe I didn’t photograph the most unique thing about this plant.  Little flowers grow inside some of its flowers! You can see a hint of this in the bottom right flower, but I’m not sure what we’re looking at there—I think they are dried up.  I believe it was stamens that turned into miniature flowers, right inside the flower—some were relatively large, too!  Bizarre!

Plum Blossoms in the Snow

Plum Blossoms in the Snow. This plant is unusual in this cross for its white edge.  It also has the classic Yukako-sport look, but with a brighter and different base color.  A favorite.

Tuidang

Tuidang.  Also a favorite.  Clean and elegant looking.

There Will Be a New Day

There Will Be a New Day.  Not sure about this one.  Newer flowers don’t seem to have the pink on them as much, but that could be the warmer weather…

Lotus Dance Lotus Dance - Lotus Dance ---

Lotus Dance.  One of the naughty ones that turned plain; maybe stress is causing this.  I believe the yellowing in the lower leaves is also from the stress of going dry a few times, and this may have caused some of these babies to sport to something plain.  I cut the plant back to the earlier growth, hoping it will recover, though I post it here mostly as a curiosity.

Unshakable Faith

Unshakable Faith.  Handsome boy.

A Walk in the Rain

A Walk in the Rain. This one started out as a lavender/gray-and-green typical Yukako sport look. Then it changed to this flower, pretty, with ruffles and bright green throats.

A Crane Reports Early Spring

A Crane Reports Early Spring.  Not at all photogenic, but interesting.  The camera is having trouble catching the purple fantasy on the petal tips and center stripes.

In the Quiet of the Night In the Quiet of the Night -

In the Quiet of the Night.  I cut this one down to older growth also, hoping for the older blossom type.

One Way Ticket

One Way Ticket.  (I actually named this before I knew I was going to Africa!)

Angel in the World

Angel in the World.  I actually like this one quite a bit, though it’s probably not very unique.  Most of the flowers have some green edging, and this seems to be holding this nicely through continued blooming (later than this photo—I’ve seen a nice head of flowers on this pretty girl).

Set them Free

Set them Free.  This one I’m including just for reference. It slowly turned to solid purple.

Candlelight Vigil Candlelight Vigil -

Candlelight Vigil.  This one was one of my favorites until… yeah.  I cut it back recently, but it changed so quickly that I don’t hold out much hope.

[Update]  I just now saw a flower from a sucker that came from nice and low after I cut it back, and … pure white.  😦

Never Again

Never Again.  A purplish twist on the usual blue/gray-and-green Yukako sport look.

The End of April

The End of April.  This one first bloomed more recently, so I know less about it.

Immortal Peaches

Immortal Peaches

First generation from leaf, below.  Not as peachy-colored as the original flowers (left), nor was the second flush of flowers on the original quite as peachy.  But that could be a culture thing, since the weather was different.

Immortal Peaches -

orry for the lousy photo, above.  I took that just now with bad lighting.  Its colors should be more like the plant below.

Immortal Peaches ---

Wonderful Day. Not very unique, but interesting.

Awakening from the Dream. A recent bloomer.

Wake Up. Wake Up. -

Wake Up.

I’m not sure what this one is trying to do!

Little Dragon Boy. Flowers are shaped like Froggie's, but in lavender and green.

Little Dragon Boy.  Flowers are shaped like Froggie’s, but in lavender and green.

The Courage to Believe.  Aka “Spotty,” in the photos below.  This is an interesting chimera with spotted leaves that seem to be continuing in most suckers.  The plant produces suckers easily (and I think more when stressed).  Its flowers vary based on which colors are in the peduncle.  The flowers tend to be on long stems.  I’ve noticed that the dark spots take a while to come in, based on temperature in the room, so they’re not as noticeable in the younger leaves (sometimes not visible at all until later).

Spotty spotty - spotty --- spoty ---- spoty ----- spoty ------ spoty ------- spoty --------
