Please read this first: IBM 5160 - Basics, for 5160 beginners (minuszerodegrees.net).

All banks are completed with 4164 class RAM chips (150 ns, 256 cycle/4ms). The mainboard works perfectly

  1. 8+1 / Texas Instruments TMS4164-15 / 64 KByte
  2. 8+1 / Texas Instruments TMS4164-15 / 64 KByte
  3. 8+1 / Texas Instruments TMS4164-15 / 64 KByte

IBM 5160, 64-256 KB
IBM 5160 (IBM XT), 64-256 KB, temporary build-up

The working unit has 256+384 KByte RAM, a IBM WD25 (20 MByte) harddisk and two floppy disk drives (360 KBytes). The hard disk drive controller is a XEBEC (62X0786).

The memory expansion card is from Quadram, namely the short version. As far as I know, there is no documentation on this short card on the Internet.

Upgrading to 640 KB

One of my next projects will be to upgrade the mainboard of my 64-256 KB (5160) to 640 KB.

The following recipe for upgrading IBM PCs and XTs to 640k of memory on
the motherboard was posted in 1985 by Mike Brown of Nicolet. I did this on
my PC Portable (XT motherboard) and it worked like a charm. It seems like
it's time for a repost ...
