Salvia aurea Kirstenbosch is a tough salvia hailing from South Africa that has aromatic greyish-green foliage and attractive coppery rusty bronze flowers from late spring, early summer and forms a dense shrub. The calyces turn from green to rusty brown after the corollas which are what attracts the insects that pollinate the flowers.
The flowers are excellent for drying and for use in potpourri as they retain their fragrance. The nectar-rich flowers are extremely attractive to butterflies. Relatively slow growing but will eventually reach a height of around about 1 metre by the same in width.
Plants perform best in a sunny position in well-drained soil. They do not need much shaping, but can be shaped after flowering to encourage more flowers.
