Several different views are provided on the species distribution. Most authors (e.g. Little and Skolmen, 1989; Oudhia, 2007) consider T. populnea as native to Asia, possibly also on Indian Ocean and Pacific island shores, and introduced and naturalized in the Americas. Its status in West Africa is uncertain.
