Bernie Mac's Wife Emotionally Recalls Her Last Words to Late Comedian: 'I'll Take Care of You'

Almost a full eight years after Bernie Mac's death, his wife is opening up about her last moments with the late comedian.

In an emotional interview for Oprah: Where Are They Now, Rhonda McCullough recalls the day her husband died.

"I said, 'Please don't please don't die," McCullogh says as she remembers visiting her Mac's hospital room after he was rushed to the emergency room for labored breathing. "I said, 'I'm here; I'm waiting for you; I'll take care of you. Just don't don't die."

In August of 2008, Mac died from complications from pneumonia, after having suffered from sarcoidosis – a chronic condition that involves inflamed organs – for some time.

The couple had been together since their teenage years, and McCullough admitted to being unsure of what to do for some time after Mac's death, saying that she felt purposeless.

" 'What am I going to do?' " she remembers thinking. "That was my whole life, was him since I was 16, and I just didn't know what I was going to do. It s like, 'What is my reasoning for being here now? What is my purpose?' "

Two years after losing her husband, McCullough found her purpose again in Mac's Sarcoidosis Foundation, which he started a year before his death.

"The foundation means to me everything that Bernard was and that he wanted, so I just really can't let it go now," she says.
