For several weeks camellias have been in bloom but I could scarcely notice while still gathering such abundance of gardenias, dahlias and zinnias. This year’s summer flowers have been productive longer than I ever remember any being, so I can’t be too disappointed that as in many parts of the country this week there were several nights here below freezing. The adverse effect on the garden was immediate, but for days the garden had been gesturing its weariness, signaling the shift.
Sasanquas stepped up to fill the void, right on time Camellia sasanqua ‘Hana-Jiman’ is covered in flowers. Rushing the season along, Camellia sasanqua ‘Yuletide’ is beginning to bloom as well—I left Yuletide for another day and collected a few milky-white, pink-brushed C. ‘Hanna-Jiman’.

Reworking the arrangement from last week made an easy way to create a vase after a busy week. Salvaged greenery and a couple of dahlias were refashioned to make room for fresh cerinthe bracts, passalong chrysanthemums and camellias.

I think of early spring as the appropriate time for pink flowers but today autumn pinks star in this November vase. Sheffield chrysanthemums have been generously shared among neighbors in our community. I am not sure which homeowner planted them first but they thrive here and make good pass-alongs. Some are quite apricot but mine are definitely pink. Butterflies are said to like them but when I was gathering flowers for today’s vase, bees were finding them delicious.

On the north side of our house Camellia sasanqua ‘Hana Jiman’ is in full bloom. Its delicate flowers carry a lovely scent.

Clematis ‘Niobe’ has been reblooming robustly for a month or so. It spills over the scalloped edge of the Fenton glass vase, drawing the eye to hand painted floral decoration.

Annette of Personal Eden wondered what my sasanquas look like growing in situ as opposed to indoors in a vase. The shrubs are utilitarian, hiding utilities from the street view and yes, we are this close to the neighbors’ drive so they have to be kept trimmed.

Camellia sasanqua ‘Hana-Jiman’ and ‘Yuletide’ screen gas utlities next to house on north side. Shrubs have intermingled over the years. They are tightly pruned to keep them from overtaking the neighbors’ drive. Beyond the red ‘Yuletide’ are several gardenias (not in bloom this time of year).

There are two sasanquas in my garden along the north side of the house. They were planted a couple years after we moved here as replacements for wax myrtles (part of the original landscaping package that came with the house. The wax myrtles had unceremoniously become upended after a minor wind storm.) These camellias just happened to be the ones I found at the nursery the day I went to shop: Camellia sasanqua ‘Hana-Jiman’ and ‘Yuletide’. At the same time I bought one hybrid Camellia ‘Coral Delight’ (C. japonica × C. saluenensis) that blooms early spring. I had beginner’s luck with these three camellias—none I have planted since have survived. The rest of the garden is too sunny and harsh and probably too dry.

The two sasanquas provide flowers for the Thanksgiving table and continue well into January. ‘Hana-Jiman’ began this year around October 24, 2020 and ‘Yuletide’ around November 4, 2020. I find them difficult to arrange. Often they are simply floated in a shallow dish where the entire flower can be easily viewed, but this week I attempted to mix them with greenery and force them into a more complex design.

A friend who grows roses has shared several vases with me this autumn. She stopped by again Saturday with more lovely, fragrant flowers. A few days earlier our next-door neighbor had dropped off a mixed bouquet from her grocery store outing that contained 3 roses. The only rose I grow is a passalong that blooms only in spring, so I took advantage of this rare opportunity to work with roses for this week’s vase.

Aiming for a traditional round design I began by gathering dark foliage of camellia and gardenia to contrast with the roses. Camellia sasanqua ‘Hana-Jiman’ has been flowering for several weeks and now is in full bloom.

The Hana-Jiman camellia has white crinkled petals edged in pink with deep yellow centers. These had been battered by Sunday morning rain and several lost their petals before I could finish the arrangement. For those that lasted their coloring complemented the yellow and pink roses.

A couple of early C. sasanqua ‘Yuletide’ have opened as well. As I turn the vase around, one is visible in the second view along with a sunflower from my next-door neighbor’s mixed bouquet.

View 3 reveals my favorite of my friend’s locally grown roses. Its large wide open form makes a nice feature flower for the design. The darker pink rose below it is one of the store-bought roses–sturdy and attractive but without scent.

After enjoying working with arranging dahlias all summer and fall they have suddenly stopped flowering. The gifts of roses came at an opportune time. As my husband continues to recuperate from a serious health issue (non-covid), our family, friends and neighbors have lent much support with flowers, meals, emails, calls, cards, errands and even lysol spray. We are nourished by their care and good wishes. We are so grateful he is back home and getting stronger.

My garden has been a one-trick pony lately, offering up only camellias to fill Monday vases. Of course I am grateful to have them blooming this time of year. It was 27 degrees F. when I left the house early Sunday morning, yet Sunday afternoon I was able to pick a few fresh blooms of Yuletide and one Hana-Jiman.

Nearby the camellias stand several gardenias that a former neighbor rooted for me many years ago. Yesterday I discovered two gardenia hips, orange fruits that only rarely appear on my gardenias.

Scouting for other materials I managed to find one tiny red Erysimum and a small Penstemon digitalis ‘Husker Red’ plant which I pulled up, including roots, from the soggy soil of the meditation circle.

To add seasonal interest I gathered greenery from a ‘Carolina Sapphire’ cypress in the back northwest corner of the garden.

I decided to include spiraea after noticing a few white flowers on the mostly bare stems. The spiraea must be confused by the mixed messages the weather has been sending recently, with temperatures sometimes warm, sometimes as I mentioned earlier, 27 degrees. This week is due to be mild and in the 60s.
A rustic wooden box serves as the container this week. The arrangement looked fine just using the items I found in the garden, but I have lots of flowers on hand that I bought for a luncheon I hosted last Monday. Adding few pale green carnations and stems of hypericum berries helped fill out the design and lifted the color.

Grateful to find a few camellias Sunday afternoon I searched through vases for inspiration and found it in the form of a tall glass candlestick. Using a special floral foam adapter that inserts into the candleholder I began arranging a few bits of foliage: shiny, deep green camellia leaves and fresh light green hellebore leaves. Scavenging from last week’s Monday vase I rescued and reused stems of gaura.
Next I positioned the recently gathered flowers. Most were red Yuletide camellias. There were a couple of pink and cream Hana-Jiman. Twice as many camellias would have been nice but when all were used I was satisfied. The morning, after all, had been below freezing.
Then I glanced over at the Thanksgiving arrangement sitting nearby, made from purchased bouquets.

After nearly two weeks those flowers were still amazingly fresh. From among them I chose a white with pink-accented Alstroemeria to fill out today’s design.

Camellia sasanquas had enjoyed several weeks of pleasant weather but temperature dips into the twenties now have left the shrubs covered in faded blooms. Plenty of buds remain. They seem in no hurry to open but I managed to find a few flowers in good condition.

The inspiration for today’s vase was actually Hydrangea quercifolia ‘Ruby Slippers’ which is taking on a nice red hue. Sprigs of silvery-green lavender and surprisingly fresh leaves of native columbine contrast with the deep green, glossy camellia leaves.

Today’s vase began as a feature of pink chrysanthemums and camellias and purple cleome. Unfortunately the camellias proved fragile, with all but one losing their petals as soon as I began arranging. Camellia sasanqua ‘Hana-Jiman’ has been blooming for a couple weeks. Perhaps it will cooperate better another time.

Fortunately I had collected and conditioned an assortment of other flowers, enough to cobble together a finished look. It resembles nothing of the delicate design I had envisioned, but it does illustrate the fair variety of blooms still showing up in the garden the last week of October.

I love daylight saving time but the time shift yesterday brought an extra hour of early morning enjoyment. The ground was covered with a very light first frost that quickly disappeared. I used the time to gather chrysanthemums and camellias for today’s vase and place them into water for conditioning, before heading off to teach my weekly Gentle Yoga class.

Both these flowers have been blossoming for several weeks. Wishing I had used some Oasis to help keep the stems in position, I went round and round inserting, removing and re-inserting these flowers until it was simply time to stop and appreciate the gift of fresh blooms in November.

I look forward to preparing a Monday vase each week and had planned to round up the last of the zinnias for today, but wow they really are past now. Time to pull them out and finally plant the pansies I bought a few days ago.
No frost yet but suddenly the air is chilly, clean and brisk. Yesterday’s sky was deep blue as neighbors gathered near the playground for an annual community BooFest, celebrating Halloween and harvest.
It seems strange but pink flowers seem to dominate this October.
Camellia sasanqua ‘Hana-Jiman’ is full of buds. Not many flowers are ready yet but I found two to use as a starting point for an arrangement. Oops! One dropped all petals as I began to work.

Yarrow is having a second flush of flowering recently. All the fancy Achillea hybrids in beautiful colors die out quickly in my garden, but this pass-along pink is aggressively loyal.

The three mixed Dahlia ‘Fireworks’ plants bought early in summer are looking stronger, but they have not been noteworthy. I cut two of the pinkish cherry red for a different pop of color. Another dahlia from this series is yellow with red markings, which I strongly dislike and did not cut, and the third is a salmony-apricot that I do like, but its produces the fewest blooms.

For filler I used a few stems of Perovskia, which is also staging a nice comeback this month in the side garden. I found two stems of Arum italicum to use for foliage.

Each Monday Cathy at Rambling In The Garden invites us to share an arrangement using materials collected from our gardens. December gifts are those special wonders one finds in the landscape this time of year.
Yesterday a friend mentioned some of her hellebores are already full of buds so I though I might find some to feature today. None were available but I did harvest some of the hellebores’ young, tender, pale green foliage, along with some lovely patterned leaves of Arum italicum and a few stems of fresh aquilegia greenery.

The red and black container is from my collection of five red and black raku pots by North Carolina potter, Charles Chrisco. I inserted a tall drinking glass into the vase to help hold and support the stems without using floral foam.
The foliage took no time to set in place. With the dynamic shape and texture of the arum, the green materials could have stood alone if necessary. There is very little blooming now so the choices were chrysanthemums (fading), Erysimum (scarce), or sasanqua camellias (best potential).

Many readers have been enamored of this red Yuletide camellia when I have used it in the past. It has been a prolific bloomer this year. The weather has not been too severe yet so many of the flowers were in good condition this morning.

Of the two sasanquas in my garden I favor the more fragrant and delicate looking Hana-Jiman. It blooms earlier though than Yuletide and is nearly finished for another year.

The camellias cooperated without much struggle and I was satisfied with the result. I snapped one portrait in the kitchen before moving the arrangement to the foyer to catch the natural light of early morning.

Today marks Cathy’s fourth anniversary of posting and hosting In A Vase On Monday and to celebrate she has challenged participants to create an anniversary contribution in something other than a vase.
I pondered over this task a lot the past few days and finally chose a memento from my daughter’s childhood that I just happened upon yesterday. This blue glazed hand was traced in clay from her own little hand for a very early elementary school project. Hooked onto the bathroom wall, it held her toothbrush for a time when she was a child.

My idea for using the hand to hold flowers turned into more of a conceptual piece as time ran out to actually hang it on the wall. Instead I posed blossoms around it and took pictures from above.

My husband and I attended an annual reunion of first cousins over the weekend and it is always a treat to get together with these special family members. Among those present were my three sisters, one of whom surprised me with a large green, urn-shaped vase she had discovered at a thrift shop. Thanks Judy! What a treat it is to have this November gift as inspiration today.

There were many more flowers than I had expected, nature’s own November gifts. Although the weather continues to be quite dry, the nights are cool and days are comfortably warm—no freeze yet this fall.

First appearing by mid-October, Camellia sasanqua ‘Hana-Jiman’ was featured several weeks ago is now in full bloom. Unexpectedly I noticed this week the red Camellia sasanqua ‘Yuletide’ is already coming into flower.

The passalong Button Chrysanthemum from my garden mentor Virgie has been a fall staple now for several decades. It always wants to rotate toward the back in any arrangement, but eventually I convinced it to cooperate, more or less.
Begonias planted in containers at the front porch did well all summer and continue to thrive. A few Cleome hassleriana (Spider Flower) have emerged.

Achillea foliage drapes along the rim of the vase. A plug of freshly emerged Lamb’s Ear adds color and textural contrast, as does a stem of Eucalyptus. I do not grow Eucalyptus but had some on hand (from last week’s book club arrangements).

While yellows, oranges and browns tend to dominate the autumn palette, I prefer instead the deep reds, so it is always a mystery to me to find so much pink when I stroll the garden borders.

I could not ignore the pinks this week, as the sasanquas are entering their glorious time. The first bloom appeared about October 10 this year on the Camellia sasanqua ‘Hana-Jiman.’ The waxy, crinkly petals are milky inside deftly transitioning to pink edges. The flowers are lightly sweet. The foliage is deep green and glossy.

After several attempts I have managed this year to establish a nice stand of Chrysanthemum ‘Sheffield Pink,’ passed along from neighbor Nancy. These flowers have a lovely form and the plants maintain a nice height without becoming leggy.

Ants are attracted to both the camellia and the chrysanthemum, but I managed to snare a few pristine blooms for today’s vase.

I begin the week by joining Cathy with In A Vase On Monday, an opportunity to share an arrangement using materials collected from the garden.
Camellias were tucked into corners and crevices and centerpieces for accents on Thursday as we celebrated Thanksgiving at our house with my two younger sisters. I cut more camellias yesterday to star in this week’s arrangement.
Pink Camellia sasanqua ‘Hana-Jiman’ continues to bloom, releasing pleasant drifts of fragrance. The scent of Camellia sasanqua ‘Yuletide’ is less distinct but the shrub’s prolific red bloom is exceptional this November.

Unfortunately after photographing the camellias I broke one of these little liqueur glasses used as vases, which makes me very sad. The glasses are part of a set of six (now five), a long-ago wedding gift from a special friend.

For Thanksgiving I made a rare cut flower purchase of two dozen roses—one bunch was coral orange and the other a sunset yellow. I am not a huge fan of florist roses but these colors drew me in and seemed so appropriate for the holiday.

Both Camellia sasanquas are blooming now at the northeast corner of our home. Red ‘Yuletide’ began flowering about 5 days ago, joining the pinky-white ‘Hana-Jiman’ which had a three-week head start.

As weathermen predicted, yesterday, Sunday, November 13, 2016, brought our first freeze of the season. The temperature dipped to about 25°F. but it quickly warmed up. As a precaution I had gathered some of the tender camellias late Saturday and conditioned them in water to use in today’s vase.
For a couple of years now I have tried to find a way to use in a Monday vase this ceramic bird house, a gift from a dear long-ago neighbor.

As an experiment I simply began inserting the stems into openings in the top and front of the house, then allowed a few more blossoms to wrap around and past the side.

I really like the way this ephemeral design turned out. For a longer-lasting display I would insert stems into plastic water tubes, but since I did not have enough, I just decided to enjoy it for the moment.

This October has been curiously mild and dry. As a result Camellia sasanqua ‘Hana-Jiman,’ which began appearing several weeks ago, have seen no frosty nights to interrupt their flowering. Several pelargoniums have recovered from the heat and humidity of the summer well enough to produce a few more salmon-hued clusters. Zinnias continue to bloom as well.

Special October Flowers
After several years of growth, August Beauty gardenias at last are flowering. That they are October gardenias rather than August ones is a bit of a mystery but this is a nice time of year for them to thrive.

After spotting these in bloom this morning, I walked around to the north side of the house checking on my other passalong gardenias. Those have been blooming five or six at a time for most of the month and indeed, they continue to flower. Hugging these shrubs are several fall-blooming Camellia sasanquas, wonderfully laden with buds. I was surprised to come across some buds already revealing colorful petals.

I imagined I even could detect the fragrance. Looking further I noticed with delight the scent was real as several C. sasanqua ‘Hana-Jiman’ tucked down near the ground were already fully open. The ants discovered them before I.

Also on this north side of the house one more surprise awaited. Never have I had such an early hellebore. It appears to be a fluke but I will be checking this area often now.

My Gaura never bloomed well in spring but has decided to try slightly to make up for it now. This one is ‘Passionate Blush’.

Lately I have read with a smile that chrysanthemums are not universally appreciated. It is understandable, they are ubiquitous and maybe old-fashioned, but I like them. I bought four large pots and placed them among the shrubs out front for instant and long-lasting color. A yellow pass-along I was given more than twenty-five years ago is reliably full of of buds and promise in autumn—-no flowers yet but I look forward to them. And for the first time I am growing ‘Sheffield Pink’ thanks to my neighbor Nancy.

Monday brings the chance to practice flower arranging by joining in Cathy’s weekly challenge In A Vase On Monday, where the goal is simply to fill a vase using materials gathered in one’s own garden.
With the forecast promising Sunday night would be quite cold with lows in the upper 20s, rescuing a few camellias yesterday morning became my priority for today. I ended up with camellias all over the house, so will share three simple arrangements using ‘Yuletide’ and ‘Hana-Jiman.’
Companions to the camellias are deliberately chosen oddballs—a sprig of lemon thyme, a stem of fern-leaf yarrow and the last few brightly-colored Profusion Fire Zinnias.

Vase 1: This shallow green-glazed container in the shape of a leaf has 3 holes to insert short-stemmed flowers, perfect for Camellia sasanqua ‘Hana-Jiman’ and pink yarrow.

Vase 2: Profusion Fire Zinnias, lemon thyme and Yuletide camellias. This small, very heavy, black Ikebana container is a recent purchase. It has a floral pin integrated into its base and measures about 1 3/4 inches (4.5 cm) in diameter.

This past week was wet, but unseasonably warm, so I was surprised at how chilly it was Sunday afternoon when I went out to the garden to gather flowers. Despite the rain chrysanthemums and camellias looked pristine.
