Day Trip: Tour the Palace Hotel in San Francisco

An historic luxury hotel close to many museums and city sights. Take a day and check out the great attractions in the heart of San Francisco.

Travel to the truly amazing Palace Hotel, 2 New Montgomery St., San Francisco, near the Financial District.

Since its opening in 1875, the Palace Hotel has been a sought-after place to stay and an important venue for events and entertaining. Located around the corner from the Cartoon Art Museum, and just blocks away from Union Square, Chinatown and the Moscone Convention Center, the Palace Hotel is convenient and captivating.

The Palace Hotel offers a Historic Tour and Lunch in the Garden Court 12:30 to 3 p.m. on selected dates each month. Admission for the tour, two-course lunch and a soft drink is $25 per person. Brunch and afternoon tea are also available. The hotel also offers free tours — no food included — on Saturdays and Tuesdays at 10 a.m. and on Thursdays at 2 p.m. through the end of 2011. Don't miss the Garden Court's glass dome and the 1909 Maxfield Parrish mural of "The Pied Piper of Hamlin" located in the Pied Piper Bar.

Enjoy an Opera Brunch at the Palace Hotel, featuring Opera Frontier, 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Sun., Sept. 18, in the Garden Court. The Palace Hotel also invites the public to plan to celebrate the holidays in Palace tradition. The Grand Holiday Sunday Brunch, to be held Dec. 4, 11 and 18 features live entertainment and a decadent menu. Call 415-546-5089 to secure your reservations for these events.

Explore the area around the Palace Hotel. The Cartoon Art Museum, 655 Mission St., exhibits works that represent the history, development, design and processes of the art forms of cartoons, comics, digital animation, illustration and video games.

The Art of the Howla look behind the scenes of how poetry is transformed into animation, is on display at the museum through Sept. 11.
