Avalanche Lily, Erythronium montanum, blooms right after the snow melts, and in some meadows carpets the ground. The large, showy, white flowers may become pink as they age. What appears to be six petals are actually three petals and three sepals. A botanist might say the flower has six tepals, a term used when petals and the underlying sepals look the same.
