The stunning Moon Bloodgood: ‘Sci-fi is my thing’

She’s come a long way from being an L.A. Lakers cheerleader. And though her stunning good looks have consistently landed her in “Maxim” magazine's Hot 100 list since 2004, Moon Bloodgood covers up her curves—but still makes it impossible for viewers to resist her—in the hit new Steven Spielberg-produced sci-fi TV series, “Falling Skies.”

The 36-year-old actress, who embodies the comeliest of her Irish, Dutch and Korean heritage, has been cast as pediatrician Anne Glass opposite lead actor Noah Wyle of “ER” fame.

“I really enjoy the fact that she's a doctor,” she says of her character, a first for Bloodgood. “I think that she's very admirable, that she doesn't often talk about herself, is extremely selfless, always calm and rational, always fair, and with reason.”

She also likes how maternal Anne Glass is.

“I kind of looked into myself and my own pain and tried to use that as a cathartic thing when I was doing the role,” she said of her character in the sci-fi thriller that’s set to air in Asia on October 3, exclusively on AXN Beyond.

“Then, I also tried to use my imagination of what it felt like to live in a world where suddenly, I lost my family—and to lose a child must be the most horrendous thing to ever go through. So I tried to use myself and my imagination.”

Not one-dimensional

Imagination is certainly key in a series like “Falling Skies,” where aliens have taken over Earth and a ragtag group of survivors buck impossible odds to rescue kidnapped children and try to reclaim their shattered lives.

Both a critical and commercial success, “Falling Skies” was written by co-creator Robert Rodat, who also wrote the Academy Award-winning movie, “Saving Private Ryan.”

“It is not just one dimensional—it is science fiction but it is human tragedy,” Bloodgood said of the show. “It is diverse characters interwoven together, trying to find their humanity and live any kind of normalcy, and re-adjust to the new world that has changed completely from the world that they know.”

A fan of sci-fi

While “Falling Skies” offered Bloodgood more scope in terms of developing her character, she is no stranger to the genre. She appeared in “Terminator Salvation” as a tough resistance fighter. She also voiced the video game based on the movie, as she did in another video game “Darksiders.”

What draws her to the genre?

“I think I've been drawn to science fiction because I'm a fan of science fiction. I like to think you're generally better at it when you're auditioning for something that resonates,” she said.

“Because I love it, I tend to want to do those kinds of projects. And then you start to do them and that becomes your thing, which is not a bad thing because it's a genre I deeply appreciate.”

“Falling Skies” will premiere in Asia on October 3. It airs Mondays at 8:20 p.m. in 14 markets across the region, first and exclusively on the pay-TV channel AXN Beyond.
