When we first compiled this bellflower database among the membership we worked on the assumption there were 300 named cultivars and we would describe perhaps 200 extant or important ones. Interest peaked and so were worked monthly and quarterly to improve the file even more. As usual, corrections, additions, and alternate opinions are welcome and have been reflected in these revised sections. Today in July 2003 we are pleased to present 342 cultivars, probably more than any one reference book or national collection.
Many of the names represent lost clones and seed strains, having only academic meaning today. Some of the old, surviving names have survived mainly in the name - the original traits having been lost or vastly improved upon by recurrent selections. At one time almost every seed house in Europe and America had their own named strains of this or that species. The same strain as translated to real plants may prove one thing from one grower and quite another from second firm. Unfortunately some of the seed exchanges, including those from otherwise reputable plant societies, have rendered true, reliable clones into variable strains the originator never intended them to become. It is both fraud and disrespect, especially when one considers the fine horticulturists and nursery houses that carefully perpetuated good clones for years only to find them polluted and oft inferior today. The horror that some "seed lists" have done to reliable nomenclature and clonal purity sometimes vastly exceeds the value of their rare species offerings. They should be ashamed and cease with their convenient silliness of wanting the biggest list of names at any cost. It is only the ignorance and ego of their leadership and members that allows this to continue in so many genera, now facing increased levels of nomenclatural chaos in the trade and our finest gardens. Resist the temptation and get some integrity. Please.
We implore the reader here to resist the temptation to distribute proven, reliable clones by seed. Also resist the tempation to name anything in everything different until you have seen, studied, or grown all possible similar variations. When in doubt, submit them to an expert, regional trial, or your local arboretum for evaluation. Leave the creation of stable, seed strains to seed companies who are prepared to take measures to prevent unauthorized pollination and get the genetics just right to assure stability and uniformity.
The following are the most desirable references for your library. These provide rich taxonomic, historical, and photographic resources not found here.
