Aciphyllas, Calosciadium, Coxella, Gingidium, Spaniards (Plants), Speargrass, Speargrasses, Taramea, Wild spaniards (Plants)

Speargrass, Aciphylla squarrosa and Aciphylla colensoi - plants which provided an exudation used as a scent. The plants have a tuft of spear-like leaves, each up to 1 m long, and a large flower-stalk up to 2 m high, the head of which is covered with long sharp spikes. Also known as taramea, karamea, or kurikuri.

Description: Transparency slides of Mr E G Williams' (Edmund Gardner Williams') travel in New Zealand, and his return voyage to England on the Corinthic. The first 3 slides show wandering albatrosses in flight and on a nest, followed by four images of native New Zealand alpine plants in the South Island including Spaniards speargrass, the South Island gentian, a mountain daisy, and a form of senecio. The following views relate to his travel on the Corinthic via Pitcairn Island, including approaching the island, small boats approaching, and two Pitcairn Island women. The next slides show scenes in Panama where they went ashore visiting various sights including Iglesia de San José and Iglesia de Nuestra Señora del Carmen, leaving next day through the Panama Canal.
