Lefkara Village - this is the most famous and popular mountain village of Cyprus. Located in the foothills of the Troodos Mountain region at an altitude of 650 meters above sea level, 40 kilometers from Larnaca and 48 from Limassol (Lefkara on the map).

There are quite a lot of such beautiful and colorful villages in Cyprus, but it is Lefkara that is advised to visit first of all as the best example and symbol of a traditional mountain village. It consists of two parts Kato Lefkara (lower) and Pano Lefkara (upper), the Centers of which are separated by a distance of 1 kilometer. All the most interesting for tourists is in Pano Lefkara.

Today Lefkara is a small village with a population of less than a thousand people, but in the Middle Ages it was one of the largest and most populated cities on the island. For tourists, it is interesting not only for its colorful narrow cobbled streets and picturesque views of the surrounding area, but also as a Craft Center for the production of silverware and jewelry, as well as lace and embroidery. The latter even received their special name Lefkaritika, something like a mixture of lace and embroidery, and, as the local craftsmen proudly declare, there is no such beautiful lace anywhere in the world. There are several workshops and shops where you can buy lace products, a small silver trinket or a real work of art made of silver as a souvenir. True, the prices for some of them reach tens of thousands of dollars.

As in any tourist village, it has its own museum, several ancient temples, classic taverns. You can come here on your own or with an excursion, walk around the village, and be sure to have lunch at a local tavern. By the way, the portions here are just huge, so you can order one dish even for two.

Lefkara is not only an attraction for a one-day visit, but also an independent resort. Of course, you should not live here for the entire period of your rest, you can stay for one or two nights. There are ATMs, a supermarket, several grocery stores, and several accommodation options. The price here is higher than in beach resorts. Lefkara weather and tourist seasons

Lefkara is located in the foothills of the mountainous region of Troodos at an altitude of 650 meters above sea level. It is always a few degrees cooler than in beach resorts. Whatever time of year you go here, remember this difference, and take a little warmer clothes than you wear downstairs.

Given that Lefkara is not a beach resort, theoretically you can go here at any time of the year. But with all this, the seasons stand out:

• Winter (December-February). In these months, you should not go to Cyprus for a holiday at all, because it is too cold, rainy and there is no beach holiday.
• Spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November). This is a good time to visit Lefkara, but it is still too cool, you need to dress warmer, especially in the evenings. In these months, there are not many tourists and lower prices for accommodation, but on the other hand, there is a high probability of rain and clouds, which will prevent comfortable walks and will not allow you to enjoy the views of the surrounding area.
• Summer (June-August). The most popular and best months to stay in Cyprus and visit Lefkara. With rare exceptions, the sun always shines, there is no precipitation and clouds. But try to avoid going to the village on weekends, it is literally crowded with tourists.

What to see and do in Lefkara

If you visit the village during the day, you will be able to see all the main sights in a couple of hours of walking, plus another hour can be added for lunch at the tavern. If you stay in the village for a couple of nights, you can visit some more interesting but not so famous sights in the village and surroundings.

• Streets and architecture - actually, this is the most important thing for which most tourists come here. Just walk around the village and admire its narrow streets and houses with long balconies. Be sure to stop by one of the craft shops during your walk, where you can buy lefkaritik lace and silverware. But be careful and carefully check potential purchases, as factory fakes have appeared on sale. Visit several workshops, take a price, and do not buy where souvenirs are too cheap, it will certainly be a fake.

• Church of the Holy Cross (Church of the Holy Cross or Timiou Stavrou) - the main and most beautiful Church of Lefkara, located in the center (church on the map. It was founded in the XIV century. It houses an important Christian shrine - a fragment of the crucifixion of Christ, as well as a large silver cross more than 700 years old. Its platform offers excellent views of the surrounding mountains and Valley. Open from 0:00 to 14:30 and 16:00 to 18:00.

• Folk Art Museum (Lefkara Folk Art Museum) - a small museum about the history of the village and its folk crafts, located in an old family mansion in the center (Museum on the map. Admission costs 2 euros, opening hours 09:30-16:00 from Monday to Thursday, and from 10:00 to 16:00 from Wednesday to Saturday, Sunday is a day off.

• Pigi – this is the source of fresh water that is now believed to have given rise to the village. It was from this place that it began to build and grow, and for many centuries the source has not dried up. Faithful Baptists hold an annual baptism ceremony here on January 6. The source is at the bottom of the village (source on map).

• Stone Kourvellos (Kourvellos) - an unusual natural formation, a pointed Stone Mountain 40 meters high. In its origin, it is a "relative" of the famous stone formations Meteora (Meteora) in central Greece. Located a couple of kilometers from the village, it is best to get there on foot while walking around the neighborhood (Kurvelos on the map)

In addition to the listed attractions in Lefkara and the surrounding area, you can see these places, but you should pay attention to them only if you have settled in the village, and not during a day trip:

• Chapel of the Archangel Michael (Archangelos Michael Chapel) in Kato Lefkara XII century.
• School of the Holy Cross (School of Timiou Stavrou) built in 1920.
• Lefkara Blooming Almond Trees.
• Monument to heroes and missing persons during the Turkish invasion of 1974 (Monument of Heroes and Missing Person of Lefkara).
• Gymnasium and Lyceum (Lefkara gymnasium and Lyseum) built in 1930.
• The dipotamos Dam is 7 kilometers north of the village, one of the largest on the island. You can fish on the reservoir.
• The Lefkara Dam dam is 4 kilometers north of the village.
• The ruins of an ancient aqueduct (Old Aquaduct) a kilometer from the village.
• The Lefkara mosque is located in the center.
• Chapels in and around the village. How to get to Lefkara

Lefkara is 40 kilometers from Larnaca and 48 from Limassol (Lefkara on the map). It is best to visit it by rented car or with an excursion, you can also take buses with a transfer. An excellent asphalt road leads to the village, part of the way passes along the expressway. There are plenty of places for free parking in the village, but not in the very center, but on the outskirts or along the main road. It is better not to go to the center by car, there are too narrow streets, there will be nowhere to put the car. Further along the village you can go for a walk, it is small.

The most convenient and interesting way to visit the village – excursions. There are excursions from Larnaca and Limassol, including visits to other attractions along the way. You can buy them on the spot in travel agencies, or book online on these sites:

On buses, this route makes sense only if you intend to stay here for a night or two. You will have to go with transfers in the village of Kofinou:

• By bus from Larnaca. Larnaca bus station (Larnaca bus station on the map) take the city bus #448, №408 or #414. You need to go to the stop Kofinou, the fare is 1.5 euros. In Kofinou, take the bus #449 or #405. Buses from Kofinou run only a few times a day, so check the schedule and carefully make a route for transfers.
• By bus from Limassol. There are no city buses from Limassol, so you have to take an intercity bus Limassol-Larnaca (Famagusta) for 4 euros, here schedule. But this bus does not stop at the bus stop in Kofinou to change to No. 405 or No. 449, so you need to arrange in advance with the driver to stop you at the nearest permitted place on the expressway (and there is no stop anywhere) and then go to the stop about a kilometer on foot. Or you need to go to Larnaca, and from there to get as written above.

The bus makes two stops in the village on the main road, from where it is a 5-minute walk to the village center.
