Abutilon / Flowering Maple

Abutilon x hybridum ‘Bella Mix’ – These seed-grown bedding plants have large (3″ wide) outward facing (instead of nodding) flowers that come in shades of white, yellow, orange, red and rose – with colours getting darker in cooler temperatures. The ‘Bella Mix’ Flowering Maples are quite compact, growing to 18″ tall, making them ideal to use as flowering houseplants. Zone 9

Abutilon ‘Souvenir de Bonn’ – A truly spectacular cultivar that has deservedly won an Award of Garden Merit. The large (4-8″ long) maple-like leaves are generously variegated on the margins with cream, making it a highly attractive foliage plant. This Parlor Maple also features pendent salmon-orange bell flowers with darker orange veins. Zone 9 hardy.

Abutilon pictum ‘Thompsonii’ (syn. Abutilon striatum ‘Thompsonii’) – Another great foliage shrub with large (up to 6″ long) maple-like foliage with long tapered lobes, generously variegated with irregular gold flecks. The yellowish-orange pendent blooms have red veining, making it a great accent plant for the center of large bedding schemes. Zone 9 hardy.

Abutilon megapotamicum ‘Variegatum’ – This South American native usually grows less than 6′ tall, but the pendent branching habit makes it ideal for growing smaller specimens in containers or hanging baskets. The leaves are heavily mottled with gold, a perfect foil for the heart-shaped blooms with yellow petals emerging from a deep red calyx. Zone 9 hardy.

Abutilon ‘Nabob’ – The large (3 inches wide) bowl-shaped pendent blooms of this tender evergreen shrub are an eye-catching glossy deep crimson, and they just keep coming from mid-spring through to autumn. These are contrasted by dark green, 3 to 5-lobed leaves, growing as a pruned shrub up to 8′ tall. This cultivar makes a great standard form and it is zone 9 hardy.

Any idea where I could find seeds for sale for Abutilon ‘Souvenir de Bonn’ and Abutilon pictum ‘Thompsonii’ Great page thanks, Maureen

    • These variegated forms are cultivars, so they are propagated by cuttings not seed. You should be able to find companies online that can send small rooted plants to you through the mail. Cheers. Mike
