Nice weather for gardening

The last few weeks have mostly been on the dry side with quick a but of sun, however the easterly sea breeze has tended to keep the heat down.  I’ve had to do some watering to encourage a few plants that prefer bog type conditions such as the variegated iris and Himalayan primulas which are shooting at the moment around the edges of my mini-pond.

Being the 3rd week in April the gooseberry sawfly larvae were in action, they are consistent with their timing I’ll say that for them.    Maybe I should look into nematodes and see if I can break their cycle so I don’t end up with green fingers having to squash them every evening during the forthcoming 2 waves.

Tulip Prinzes Irene

The tulips are in the final stage of their flowering season this week I thought I would show the progression of Tulip ‘Daydream’ from yellow to orange.

Since daylight is stretching out into evenings I went for  cycle around the Phoenix Park to get some exercise in due to the lockdown and I noted a wonderful scent passing by certain parts of the roadway so following my nose it led me to tale a picture of this plant for later identification which is Smyrnium olusatrum, its common names being Black Lovage or Alexanders.   Interestingly the deer don’t seem to touch it.

Tiptoe through the tulips.

Today was a nice sunny warm day with temperatures of 20C in the back garden, which is ideal gardening and barbecue weather.  The honeybees were about on the mahonia and the large bumble beees made an appearance too.    I have a surplus of plants not set yet due to the fact I cannot travel so I decided I will make them fit my garden.   Yet more gladiolus to get rid of so this time I planted the corms from a variety called ‘Nori‘. I  set Begonia ‘Illumination Apricot’  in a hanging basket.  Gladiolus nanus ‘Galaxian’, Lilium ‘Rosella’s Dream’,  tubers from a ball type Dahlia and Lilium ‘Rialto’ were all stuffed into a large window box.  I put Chlidanthus fragrans and Tricyrtris hirta in  pots in the greenhouse and finally some more ball type dahlias and Lilium ‘Easy Whisper’ in another large container.

Moved the roses from the frame now that frost is less likely, though may need to be prepared to move them if it does go sub 10C. Will have to wait for the landlord to drop by with some petrol to cut the lawn.     It has been quite dry over the past few weeks, therefore it was necessary to water several newly planted and established plants.    Also needed to restrict the leaves from crinum powellii crowding out my Asiatic primulas which have begun to sprout.

Split Corona Daffodils in bloom

Most of the March daffodils have faded by now and i have removed the heads so the energy is not diverted to for next year.    This week the split corona types are out and the weather has been dry and sunny.

Narcissi ‘Lemon Sailboat’

I  had  intended to plant lots of Gladiolus corms ‘Trader horn‘ & ‘Nova Lux‘ at my parents place this Easter but due to movement restrictions that won’t be happening this year so waste not, want not I planted them in any free spot I could find across the garden so I’ll see what happens by the end of Summer into Autumn.

The tulips have come out in the sunshine this week.

Virus panic and gardening

If had intended to go to the first ISNA plant fair of the year in St. Annes park this year but I received a call that it had been cancelled due to restrictions imposed by Dublin city council to prevent gatherings.  Today I went for a cycle around Farmleigh and found the gates to the walled gardens closed.    Undoubtedly this is a setback for the traders since a lot of their revenue comes in the Spring between March and June.      The Alpine Garden society has also cancelled their main event, unsurprising since more of their members are retirees.     Stores that remain open have restricted access policies and even Lidl makes you queue 2 meters apart before you can gain entry to the store so no quick run in and get what you need everything has to be planned.

Daffodils

Even though the weather was dry and sunny there was not a lot to do in the garden this weekend.    I did plant some Tigridia pavonia bulbs in the herb border and Polianthes tuberosa internally.   Not had much success with this plant in recent years.   Gladiolus nanus ‘Galaxian’ are the remaining bulbs to plant.

Cat among Anenome blanda ‘White Splendour’

Elsewhere the seedlings are up, now lets see how the tomatoes do this year because I don’t have any other sources of these plants this year.   I set a mizuma seed mix outside hopefully there are no severe frosts and they will grow provided the cats don’t dig them up.

I did get some Rose fertilizer in Lidl today I applied that this afternoon and tied up the roses as intended last week.

In bloom this week

  • Daffodils (various)
  • Clematis armandii
  • Mahonia
  • Anenome blanda
  • Primula vulgaris
  • Leucojum aestivum ‘Gravetye Giant’
  • Tulips

March Daffodils – Spring has sprung

The plants are starting to pick up speed in the last few weeks as the day length increases and the daffodils have been in full bloom since the third week in February.   Interestingly the more complex daffodils like ‘Ducat Cluster’ do not fare as well and only flower on alternate years.    Those daffodil bulbs I bought last year labelled as ‘St. Patricks Day’ were not that variety – most disappointed, however, I have a few around the garden from years ago.

Narcissus ‘Red Devon’
Narcissus ‘St. Patricks Day’

I had to secure the Lidl frame with duct tape and it has held up well in the windy few weeks we have had and given the plants I put inside a nice boost.  You can see how well the Dianthus ‘Kahori’ has come on as have the Primulas and Erythronium dens canis ‘Old Aberdeen’ has already flowered.

The lawn got its first cut last weekend which is not a bad interval since the last cut in early December and the mower started first time.  I mowed around the crocus to let them build some energy for next year. My Anemone blanda ‘White Splendor’ experiment worked whereby I sat several corms next to the crocus in the lawn so they don’t get mown over.

Mahonia

The Mahonia shrub is in full bloom and has a nice intermittent scent.  I got some herb plants from Lidl for the herb border.  Helichrysum italicum known as the Curry plant, not actually any good for curry spices and Salvia rosmarinus (Rosemary). I have thyme ready to roll from last year as well.    Caught an ash plant starting to bloom again and quickly snuffed it out, the seeds from the nearby plants do land in my garden and will take off when ignored, if humans abandoned this area a combination of Ash trees (Fraxinus excelsior), ivy (Hedera helix) and Buddleia davidii would dominate the area in time.

I also set some seeds indoors like the ‘Sungold’ Tomatoes, Lupins, Calendula and Mizuna.  Just as well Lidl arrived with the seed and cutting compost and the grow in the bag compost which I will use in pots later this year.

In Bloom this week

  • Daffodils (various)
  • Crocus
  • Clematis armandii
  • Mahonia
  • Anenome blanda
  • Primula vulgaris
  • Iris reticulata
  • Leucojum aestivum ‘Gravetye Giant’
  • Tulips

To do list

  • Sort out the greenhouse contents.
  • Plant up some more bulbs
  • Get potting compost from Lidl while it is in stock
  • Tie up some Roses.

I managed to get a few hours Saturday morning to sort the greenhouse and pot some new plants. Re-potted a Marguerite bush and set the Dahlias tubers in the greenhouse.

  • Ornithogalum saundersiae
  • Giant Lilium ‘Pretty Woman’
  • Dahlia ‘Cornell’
  • Dahlia ‘Orange Marmalade’
  • Dahlia ‘Thomas Edison’
  • Lilium Regale
  • Lilium Scheherezade
  • Gladiolus murielae (x20 bulbs)

The weather was dry and sunny but coolish with a North-Westery breeze (10C) on Sunday. I took the time to weed and plant the herb border I had been intending several months ago with Rosemary, Thyme, Curry plant and Lavender (Lavandula Stoechas) interspersed with gladioli corms. and Tritonia laxifolia.

Building up 2020 seasons collection

Spent an hour or two emptying the compost bin a laborious task with little to show for it except aching muscles in any case the job had to be done before lawn cutting season started.  I noticed Geum urbanum seems to be staging a mini come back after I rooted it all out a few years ago I applied the hand fork with extreme prejudice.  Another weed I will need to figure out how to deal with is I think Allium vineale which has invaded one of my borders to the extent it has become a nuisance.   Think I will leave that border bare next year to weed it out.

Cat preoccupied with Hemerocallis fulva (Daylily) protected from slugs and snails with Slug Gone.

I have put down the Slug Gone pellets around some plants that sprout at this time of year that tend to be a culinary delicacy for the slugs and snails such as day lilies, Madonna lillies, Dogs tooth violet (Erythronium) and Nerines.

Stocked up with some herbaceous roots from Lidl.    As the weather was reasonable I planted some in the Greenhouse. I also assembled the Lidl polycarbonate cold frame which is somewhat delicate and would not take much abuse so I tied it down to stop the wind taking it away.

  • Phlox paniculata ‘Bright Eyes’ (potted)
  • Lilium ‘Rosella’s Dream’
  • Rudbeckia nitada ‘Herbstsonne’ (potted)
  • Hemerocallis ‘Crimson Pirate’ (potted)
  • Begonia ‘Illumination Apricot’
  • Tricyrtis hirata

In addition potted up Ismene ‘Sulphur Queen’ and Hippeastrum ‘Balentino’.

The weather this week has been characterised by strong winds and sub 10C temperatures. It’s unusual to get a sustained wind field like that in Dublin.  There has not been any significant frost this winter.  Despite the wind I was able to cycle over to Mr. Middletons warehouse and got some plants for the new season.

In most seasons the first of my daffodils start the flower on the last week in February, this year they are at least a week maybe two early and comparable to last year.

Tulip ‘Giuseppe Verdi’

Quick trip to Lidl

Not much gardening this weekend other than enjoy the remaining display of early flowering crocus before the wind and rain squalls arrive.   The first of the daffodils opened in my garden being the dwarf  Narcissus ‘Tete a Tete’ (Cyclamineus Daffodil). If the wind does not knock them I might have the first of the larger flowering varieties next week.

My local Lidl tarted up the bulbs they had not sold last year instead I skipped this store for the freshly sourced bulbs in another.

Bulb Shopping and Planning

Not a lot to do in the garden this weekend other than take in the wonderful scent of  the Daphne that flood the garden.   I did a small bit of weeding and general tidying up, at this point I’m just waiting for the right time to start the seeds and monitoring future offers in Lidl to pick up some essentials.

Crocus chrysanthus var.-fuscotinctus

The sun is a little hard to come by this time of year but when it does show up for a while the crocus start to open and I have quite a few of them this year.

Flowering Daphnes and pruning

Phoenix Park Sunset

Finally got around to some gardening to start 2020.  I am thinking of digging out the old stock Gooseberries this year and replacing them with new varieties but rather than remove them for now I cut them back hard and removed all the old wood.

I pruned the roses and the apple tree since it that time, though it is probably poor timing with frosts expected for most of this week.

I finally figured out what the correct name for one of the shrubs I picked up a few years ago Daphne odora Marianii and bought Daphne gemmata ‘Royal Crown’ for some fragrance in April/May time frame.    The strongly scented Daphne bholua ‘jacqueline postill is currently in full bloom is are Sarcococca confusa which is also scented and Cyclamen coum.

Even some of the Crocus and snowdrops are starting to bloom after the relatively mild December.

Stocked up on seeds – Night scented stock, Lupin ‘Tutti Frutti’, Tomato ‘Sungold’, Lettuce ‘Mizuna mixed’.
