I was somewhat shocked by the negative reviews. This hotel was absolutely perfect because of the location/view. Nestled just next to the train station, it was so convenient to come/go. There weren't a ton of eating options, but we managed.

Staff were extremely friendly. The room was small, but for a single and only one night, it was fine. The bathroom is definitely small, but seems perfect for Europeans since I didn't see a single person overweight there.

Staff were honest and helpful for planning a visit to Jungfrau.

The view is just out of this world. For the price, this was WELL worth it.

Great location if you are arriving by train since since right smack by the train station. Hotel is 3 star and has seen better days.
The price is moderate and the view is breathtaking. Complimentary breakfast is included however he caveat here is that it's not the best. It's crowded sit where you like sort of situation. Rowdy guests with kids with loud voices are not my scene specially early in the morning. It could be better. Service is hit and miss.

I just returned from a 4-night stay at Hotel Derby. I have stayed in Grindelwald twice before, and my stay at Hotel Derby was the most pleasant stay. Yes, the rooms aren't huge, but that goes for the other 2 hotels in Grindelwald. They are, as most Swiss hotels, very clean, and comfortable, and updated.

The reception staff was the best! Very friendly and helpful. Marion helped us plan two day trips which were full of wonderful hiking spots - even though I am familiar with Grindelwald, she selected Wanderwegs that were new to me, with magnificent views.

I don't understand one reviewer's complaints about the breakfast - I am Swiss/American, have traveled and lived in Switzerland - the breakfast at the Derby is more than ample, with bacon and eggs, on top of the usual breads, cheeses, cold cuts, fruits, birchermuesli, juices, etc.

There are many hotels to choose from in Grindelwald - Derby is right at the train station, which worked out great for my needs. And many of the rooms face the mountains, which is a spectacular view. I highly recommend this hotel!

We made reservations for this restaurant and when we walked in the server said fondue or Ala Carte? And he was very abrupt. Older guy that I overheard him say had been there since 1974. They sit us in the back and one server took our order and never came back. There was another server working in our area and we had to ask her for another drink, dessert and check.
We did have fondue which was so-so. There was bread, potatoes, little corn, gherkins and little white onions to dip in the fondue. Odd combination.
We saw other items on the menu and talked about coming back but didn't happen because of the poor service.

I stayed at this hotel in Grindelwald for a few days and it was nice but could've been much better. We got a room at almost the top floor and the view was amazing. Sadly if we wanted to open our balcony doors or go sit out on the balcony the grossest smell would be awaiting. We could not enjoy the wonderful view and fresh air to the overpowering smell that was just awful. The breakfast wasn't the best and the employees that work there are very rude. I asked for a hot chocolate packet to take up to my room and they said it would $5 in their currency. $5 for a single packet to make one cup of hot chocolate. The one good thing about them is they are next to the train station to get on and go up to the top of Europe. But then again you could get a better hotel thats only a block away and might have better views and customer service.

I'm rounding up to a three-star review, but this is really a 'tweener between two and three.

The location cannot be beat. Step outside the front door and the train station is right there. From there you can get to Kleine Scheidegg and Interlaken quite easily. Additionally, you are near the sports center, which has a pool, ice skating, curling, along with other activities. The Co-Op is also a short walk. Again, great location.

The rooms aren't enormous, particularly if you've got two people with a fair amount of luggage (ie: you are coming to go skiing like I was). That said, the beds were super comfortable and we had a small balcony that overlooked the train station. The trains are super quiet, so we never had an issue with noise at night. The bathrooms don't offer a ton of counter space, but the water pressure in the shower was phenomenal - particularly after a long day of skiing. Rooms had a safe, in case that's of interest to you.

I was there as part of a group of family friends totaling 50 or so. We opted for a stay that includes both breakfast and dinner. Breakfast was pretty standard, though I will say that they had a great selection of freshly-made breads, along with a broad set of options for jelly. They also had both scrambled and hard-boiled eggs. Coffee was brought to you by the staff and it was strong (in a good way). Dinner was not my thing. The salad bar was limited, which is important as I don't eat a ton of meat. The entree choice was limited to one each night as part of a four-course menu. One night we did have fondue and that was a highlight - as the restaurant is known for its fondue (and I get why). If you have a chance to do that, you should. We didn't find a ton of dining options in town, otherwise I would have considered dining out as I was not impressed with the dinner choices on most evenings. The dining staff was extremely friendly and they did a great job taking care of a group as large as ours. We truly appreciated them.

Logistically, the ski room is located in the lower level on the opposite side of the hotel from the train station, which made things a little wonky when coming/going from skiing since you were likely using the train station. The ski room had an efficient set of sliding racks, so you could really keep a ton of skis in the room. The staff seemed nice enough, however we asked if they could help us making a reservation at the curling rink and they declined to do so. In other hotels we have used as part of this annual group ski trip, we've had more assistance from the hotel with requests such as this.

The location makes this a three star review, absent that, a two star hotel.

      First to Review

My boyfriend and I were part of a fourteen-person ski group that headed to Switzerland the first week of March 2014. Arrangements had been set up at Derby Hotel for us to stay there for the duration of our trip.

Upon our arrival, you could tell that this hotel was crammed into a prime location in the town of Grindelwald. Directly behind the hotel is the train station, which is super convenient for traveling pretty much where ever you needed to go. If you wanted to head into town for eating, shopping, etc, it was a quick walk. Location, location, location!

We checked in and headed up to our rooms. The rooms are on the small side with basic accommodations - little fridge, hair dryer, a place to put your clothes, etc. Honestly, this isn't a major complaint because we didn't plan to spend a lot of time hanging out in our hotel room - I mean, it's Switzerland! Each room has a balcony - ours happened to overlook the little train station, but had a great view in the background. Don't be concerned about the noise from the trains - the trains are electric and very quiet and you can't hear anything in the rooms.

Every morning, we started with a breakfast buffet. My only complaint about this trip is that breakfast was the same thing every morning - a table of breads/crossaints, jellies/jams, lunch meat, cheese tray, yogurt, granola, and hard/soft boiled eggs. I'm not someone that likes breakfast, so I would make myself a sandwich each morning. If the eggs were hard boiled, I would also throw them on a sandwich.

Every evening, the group met for dinner. The dinners here were fantastic - typically 4 courses (including dessert) and would change daily. I didn't have anything that I didn't enjoy. We did have a few picky eaters and one person with a nut allergy at our table that the restaurant was able to accommodate.

What stuck out the most about this hotel is that everyone was SO nice! The women at the front desk, particularly Evi, were absolutely fantastic! They answered all of our questions, were able to point us in the right direction when we were lost, made excellent suggestions about where all the cool places were, etc. They really helped us out a lot!

I know this review was a little rambling, but there were just so many things to say about this hotel. I would definitely recommend it!

      Couple of important hotel notes:
      1. There is a boot/ski room in the basement of the hotel
      2. A sports center is located close-by (a few minutes walking) for those who want to get a workout in. I believe the sports center also has a pool.
      3. The train station is directly behind the hotel. Super convenient! (PS - the trains leave exactly when they're scheduled to, so don't be late!)
      4. Complimentary WIFI is available for hotel guests.

The concierge at our hotel told us the Derby had the best fondue in town and it did not disappoint. We enjoyed the salad bar and their wine list. Their famous cheese and the Cava were the favorites. The meet a la chinoise was fair. The bread was devine. Linda, our server, helped us make selections and knows the menu cold. Thanks to Linda.

We were passing through, and wanted to try the beer, and street after noticing they had an extensive ice cream sundae menu, we figured we'd try that too. Oh. My. Goodness. The beer had a crisp yet mellow taste, which was very refreshing. The ice cream was the best I've had, and considering I am quite the ice cream lover, this is saying a lot. Go to this place, you won't be disappointed!
